THE MERWIN OAK, VASSALLO PARK TREE HAS FALLEN

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

As many of you know by now. the large oak known as the MERWIN OAK in Vassallo Park has fallen.

Click on the photos and links.

The tree had been treated for fungus back in 2012 but its prospects were considered dim at the time. The fungus and numerous storms since then certainly added to the stress of this very old tree, which dates back to revolutionary times.

A photo from 2014 shows that many large branches were also removed in an effort to save and stabilize it; it had also been cabled.

It's always a little sad to see such a grand old tree die.
