BY SPECIAL REQUEST--FROM 2023--BRIEF HISTORY OF DISEASE HYSTERIA BY BRUCE DAVIDSON

A Brief History of Disease Hysteria BY BRUCE W. DAVIDSON

For the past half-century or more, manufactured scares have been a recurrent part of life. Every year a very small number of people are killed (usually only 1) or injured by bears here in Hokkaido, Japan. However, the news media invariably plays up these incidents.

As a result, for a few weeks every year some hiking trails in Sapporo are ritually closed off to the public after some bear sightings. Many people I know have a great fear of bears, though the actual risk of being killed by a bear is extremely small. Their chances of dying in a bathtub are far, far greater.

On a grander scale, we have frequently observed the worldwide-scare phenomenon in recent history. The Covid panic should be viewed as simply part of a longer history of fear-mongering. Government officials, corporations, NGOs, and mainstream journalists often create and then exploit excessive fear, especially of diseases.

Thirty to forty years ago, the scary disease obsession was AIDS. Though AIDS is indeed a fearful, deadly malady that has taken a great number of lives, much needless panic sprang from the poorly informed, ideologically slanted treatment of the AIDS epidemic by news media, government officials, activists, and others. Inconsistently, many of them wanted the public to view gay men as uniquely victimized by AIDS and yet also to embrace the belief that AIDS was equally a threat to heterosexuals.

In his book The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS Michael Fumento documented the distortion and politicization of HIV/AIDS by news media, politicians, activists, and bureaucrats such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, who exaggerated the threat to the general population.  READ MORE ATA Brief History of Disease Hysteria ⋆ Brownstone Institute

BY SPECIAL REQUEST AT THE MAILBOX---FROM OCT. 2022, EQUITY IS ERODING EDUCATION

'Equity’ Is Eroding Education
KERI D. INGRAHAM OCTOBER 26, 2022
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AT CHALKBOARD REVIEW

‘Equity’ is dominating K-12 public education. Look no further than the mission statement and core values of most school districts. Set foot on a primary or secondary campus, and you’ll see the word predominately displayed in hallways, classrooms, faculty lounges, and staff offices. Some schools even include the word on their school logo or crest.

The drive for equity has bypassed the traditional goal of education in our public schools. Equity is no longer about providing equal opportunity but forcing uniform performance outcomes. This is problematic for multiple reasons. MORE AT ‘Equity’ Is Eroding Education | American Center for Transforming Education (discovery.org)

INDIAN POINT OWNER SUES NY TO OVERTURN LAW BANNING RADIOLOGICAL WATER IN HUDSON RIVER

Indian Point owner sues NY to overturn law banning radiological water in Hudson River--Thomas C. Zambito
New York State Team

The owners of the shuttered Indian Point nuclear power plant sued the state of New York today, claiming a law banning the discharge of radiological water into the Hudson River is a “blatant infringement” of the federal government’s role in nuclear safety.

The lawsuit filed by Holtec International in U.S. District Court in Manhattan asks a judge to declare a law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in August unconstitutional.

It claims the measure, backed by Democratic lawmakers from the lower Hudson Valley, was billed as a way to protect real estate values in river towns when the true intent was to regulate radiological health and safety.  MORE AT Holtec sues NY to overturn ban on radiological water in Hudson River (lohud.com)

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM SARA BOYCE

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM SARA BOYCE:

To the editor:

My letter to the CHFSD Board of Trustees appeared in the March 28th edition of The Gazette.

I would like to respond to a letter in the April 11th issue addressing some of the issues that I raised in that letter. There is nothing wrong with providing the "Key" needed to unlock a student's potential. Indeed, it is already being done as required by federal and state education department mandates.

The Croton-Harmon School district has almost always addressed the needs of students. Perhaps, the person who responded does not understand that the school is already required to accommodate every student with special needs including blindness, deafness, or any other disability. Every student with special needs has an I.E.P. formulated by parents of the child and professionals including special education teachers in each building who address those needs be it a service dog, extra time for tests, an aide who will accompany that student through the school day, someone who can sign, a speech teacher, reading teacher, etc. If a parent and the I.E.P. team agree, the district will provide an alternate placement that would be better for the student. There are programs in place and professionals available to help every student no matter what the need. D.E.I. is not about those needs.

To understand the whole nationwide D.E.I. movement, it is necessary to research the origin and motivation of this movement. It will take time and effort. It is quite the rage in the USA. As I read the DEI committee's proposal, I just shake my head over and over asking myself WHAT does that mean? What are they trying to say without saying it? Perhaps, a good place to start would be to find out what the equity lens is and why equity must not be confused with equality. Another, catch phase to research is "privilege" and what the implications are about it in the policy. Personally, I'd like the BOE to explain to me exactly who is privileged in Croton, and how they will determine which students and parents are privileged. Perhaps, the BOE will explain who in the CHFSD is oppressed or not privileged. Does not every student have the same classes (many required by the state) and actiivities available in which to participate and professionals ready to help with any issue. Equity is about "fixing" historical injustices despite the reality that laws and amendments have done away with those.

In closing, I would like to urge all parents with students at all grade levels in Croton-Harmon schools to pay attention to what is being done by the BOE. Ask questions. Get explanations if you don’t understand something. I sure intend to. Get involved please. Also, I urge all residents, not just parents, to get involved.

Thank you.
Sara Boyce
