BY SPECIAL REQUEST, WILLIAM THOMAS GADDIS

By special request: As many of you know, novelist William Gaddis was a village resident in the 1960's. Your editor finally got around to re-reading his first book, THE RECOGNITIONS. It's not an easy read but is worth the trip and highly recommended.

For those who don't know,....William Thomas Gaddis, Jr. (December 29, 1922 – December 16, 1998) was an American novelist. The first and longest of his five novels, The Recognitions, was named one of TIME magazine's 100 best novels from 1923 to 2005 and two others, J R and A Frolic of His Own, won the annual U.S. National Book Award for Fiction. Gaddis is widely considered one of the first and most important American postmodern writers. READ MORE ABOUT HIM HERE.

And stay tuned for additional posts.

NY--CAMPUS CHAOS, ANGRY PROTESTERS AT NY-ANTI-ISRAEL DEMONSTRATION PELT NYPD WITH BOTTLES, BASH COP'S HELMET WITH CHAIR

Angry protesters at NYU’s anti-Israel demonstration pelted NYPD officers with bottles as they raided the demonstration late Monday – with someone even bashing a cop’s helmet with a chair, a top department official said.

The NYPD moved onto the Greenwich Village campus, with permission from the university, when the camped-out group failed to disperse from Gould Plaza around 4 p.m., Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry told WABC Tuesday morning.

Community Affairs cops made the first attempt, before the department’s Strategic Response Group filed in, Daughtry said.

Some members of the crowd “chose violence” and whacked the responding cops with bottles, with one hitting a cop on his helmet with a chair, the police official tweeted, alongside a photo of the mark the blow left on the hardhat. MORE AT

THE PERILS OF RAISING "SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTIVISTS"--PART TWO---PROTESTERS WITH FLARES MARCH ON NYPD HQ AS OVER 130 ARRESTED AT NYU

Excerpted: Anti-Israel protesters armed with flares marched toward NYPD headquarters late Monday after the number of students arrested at NYU reportedly rose to over 130.

Videos of Monday night’s protests show demonstrators holding bright flares over their heads while marching toward One Police Plaza while others waved flags, banged drums and chanted, “Gaza.”

Other clips show NYPD officers in riot gear monitoring protesters who chant, “We will free Palestine, within our lifetime.”........A spokesperson for NYU told PIX 11 that “disorderly, disruptive and antagonizing” protesters packed Gould Plaza, prompting the university to send the NYPD a written request for officers to intervene. Protesters with flares march on NYPD HQ as over 130 arrested at NYU (nypost.com)

State aid increases small, or none, for Lower Hudson school districts. What did yours get?
Diana Dombrowski
Rockland/Westchester Journal News

Half of the Lower Hudson Valley's school districts will receive more state "foundation aid" in 2024-25 than they did this year, while the other half will get the same amount.

But no one will take a loss.

The state budget, finalized Saturday, maintained a precedent that school districts do not receive less foundation aid than the previous year, scrapping Gov. Kathy Hochul's proposal to do just that.  See the list of schools at Lower Hudson NY schools to see small or no state aid increases (lohud.com)

----One of Oakland’s oldest jewelry stores was targeted in a brazen, armed daytime robbery on Wednesday that all but cleaned out the store. The robbery was the worst in the family-owned store’s 40 years of operation, ABC 7 reported. Eight armed suspects stormed into Phuong Jewelry in Oakland’s Chinatown just after noon and began crashing the display cases and grabbing the contents while the 69-year-old mother ducked behind the counter and screamed for help — she would eventually escape to a back room, where her 76-year-old husband emerged with a gun to chase the thugs away. MOTHER'S DAY IS COMING--& NOW THE ANNUAL REQUEST---A LITTLE MEMORY FROM ONE OF THE ELVES AND THE SOUTHERN CONTINGENT---MOTHER'S DAY ETIQUETTE LIVES ON... CORSAGE BEAUTY AND SWANSON'S TOO

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

For those of you who leave everything to the last minute (and you know who you are!!!), MOTHER'S DAY 2024 is May 12th.

For the next few weeks, we'll be featuring special posts here at the blog to help you keep the shopping--and more--as local as possible....

But for now....

How many of you still celebrate this day with an orchid corsage? Orchids were THE flower of choice in the 60's and 70's....and still are in some families......

--MOTHER'S DAY ETIQUETTE LIVES ON...CORSAGE BEAUTY courtesy of CHICKS DOWN SOUTH:

"As a young child, I remember the importance of my sister and me picking out a white corsage for my mother to wear at church on Mother’s Day. This flower does not symbolize her being a mother, but rather shows her love in an outward manner for her own mother. My Mom would wear a white flower which indicated her mother was deceased. If your mother is alive you would wear red or pink." READ MORE FROM CHICKS DOWN SOUTH HERE.
