FOR COLLECTORS OF CHOCOLATE CARDS, NEW FROM OUR FRIENDS AT EFSP

New from our friends at European Film Star Postcards: Published by Nieuwe Merksemsche Chocolaterie

Last year, a Dutch film postcard collector asked me if I knew more about the Nieuwe Merksemsche Chocolaterie. I did not, nor did Ivo or Marlene. But I discovered that I had several postcards from this publisher in my collection. Nieuwe Merksemsche Chocolaterie S.P.R.L. was located in Merksem, a district of the city of Antwerp. Antwerp is famous for its pralines. The first Belgian chocolate factory was opened in 1845 by Adolphe Meurisse on Dam Square in Antwerp. Between 1930 and 1960, more than 30 'chocolateries' were located in the city centre. Many of these chocolate producers presented film star cards in their chocolate boxes as a gift for their customers. Here are fifteen of these postcards from the late 1940s and early 1950s, published by Nieuwe Merksemsche Chocolaterie.  See much more at

NEW FROM TRAVALANCHE: THE FABULOUS DORSEYS

Tommy (1905-56) and Jimmy Dorsey (1904-1957) were among the biggest musical names of the Big Band era, and we’ve had dozens of occasions to mention them here, so today we shine the spotlight in their direction.

The Dorseys were from Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, about an hour northwest of Allentown. Their father was a music teacher and marching band leader. The boys began playing instruments as children. Both started out on trumpet, then later switched to other instruments: Jimmy on sax and clarinet, Tommy on trombone. Both also became composers, arrangers, conductors and bandleaders. When still teenagers they formed a hot jazz combo called Dorsey’s Novelty Six, later known as Dorsey’s Wild Canaries. In 1927 they formed their orchestra, which enjoyed great success on radio, record, and in live performances over the decades. From 1935 through 1945 they operated separately for the most part, then they reunited during their final years. That’s criminally simplified timeline, just to get you oriented.  READ MORE AT

TESLA, THOSE LITHIUM BATTERIES AND FIRES...FIREFIGHTERS DUMP THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF WATER BATTLING BLAZE

Firefighters recently ran through thousands of gallons of water as a Tesla electric car burned in the state of Pennsylvania earlier this week.

Morris Township Volunteer Fire Company #1 posted photos of the inferno and the aftermath, noting that around 12,000 gallons of water were used.

"In total approximately 12,000 gallons of water was utilzed. To give you an idea of the severity, crews can normally extinguish a fully involved vehicle fire with approximately 500 gallons or less," the fire company said in a Facebook post. "Due to the lithium ion battery on the vehicle, extinguishing this fire would require additional tankers as the vehicle would continue to reignite and burn fierce at times. In total it took crews nearly two hours of continually applying water on the vehicle as the battery would begin to reignite.....READ MORE AT Crews battle fire in Pennsylvania as Tesla car burns - TheBlaze
