FISHHOOK WATERFLEA FOUND IN NEW CROTON RESERVOIR

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Fishhook Waterflea Found in New Croton Reservoir Welcome to NYC.gov | City of New York

Department of Environmental Protection (nyc.gov)

If you have ever fished in a waterbody with a large infestation of the invasive fishhook waterflea (Cercopagis pengoi) or its close relative spiny waterflea (Bythotrephes longimanus), then you probably haven’t forgotten it. The gunked-up fishing line, globs of beady-eyed little crustaceans that get caught in the guides on your fishing rod, and food chain impacts make this species an angler’s nightmare.

This past summer, the fishhook waterflea was detected by DEP biologists in New Croton Reservoir samples. The population appears to be low but is likely to grow throughout the spring and summer this year. They are capable of asexual reproduction, so dramatic explosions in populations are generally observed within a short time of introduction, and they produce an egg that is resistant to drying and freezing and can survive ingestion, which makes them great at spreading quickly. Researchers have not found any effective management strategies once a population is established.

The discovery of another invader in New Croton Reservoir means we can anticipate more changes than we are already seeing from recent invasions by zebra mussels, whose impacts are still emerging, and hydrilla, an aggressive invasive plant that DEP is managing. If fishhook waterflea populations get high enough, the numbers and types of other native zooplankton species may shift, which will impact both the fish and other organisms higher up the food chain and the tiniest organisms lower on the food chain. This might mean you see more algae blooms or fewer planktivorous fish like crappies, sunfish, and perch in the coming years.

What We’re Doing:  Surveying nearby reservoirs to assess the spread
Working with NYS DEC and other partners to survey for regional spread
Enhancing our decontamination protocols for boats and gear to reduce the risk of spread
Monitoring New Croton Reservoir to understand the community shifts

What You Can Do  Report any sightings outside New Croton Reservoir to nyiMapInvasives.org – include a photo and keep a specimen, if possible
Use caution when moving from one reservoir to another – clean, drain, dry your gear and boots
Don’t move bait
Consider gear for exclusive use on New Croton, including a waterflea-resistant line like Sea Flee or No Flea monofilament line
