DEI THOUGHTS FROM JESSICA DEICKMAN REGARDING DEI POLICY PROPOSED #0105 AND REMEMBER THE 3/26 4PM HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE HIGH SCHOOL

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

A LETTER FROM JESSICA DEICKMAN REGARDING DEI POLICY PROPOSED #0105

To the Board of Education,

After a very careful and detailed review of the policy proposals for the DEI policy, concern arises with regard to the curriculum rules that will be applied.

The language describes that curriculum would be analyzed for bias (a vexed proposal because, as we learned on the district’s DEI team, everything has a bias, intentional or otherwise) and then 'adjusted,' (a very open term that could describe any degree of manipulation to a lesson) or outright eliminated if the bias is not factored in. This then opens a path for the potential elimination or constriction of ANY pertinent or relevant lesson information, based merely on the whims and opinions (in fact, bias itself) of a single person or a small group of officiators ('superintendent or another assigned person').

That the superintendent (or 'another assigned person,') will be the one to make decisions about what is bias and what is not reads as a tactic of micromanagement detrimental to the teachers and classrooms. It could be used to leverage restrictive authority against the judgement and experience of amazing teachers, who have cumulatively earned the CHUFSD environment its high rankings and tremendous reputation.

CHUSD residents and student families will be scrutinizing curriculum more than ever before to ensure that students' well-being and growth is foremost, and that instruction does not become weakened, one-sided and without substance.

Please take this into consideration in creating the final format of the policy.

Sincerely,
Jessica Dieckman
