IN THE NEWS AGAIN---THOSE ELECTRIC BUSES---PROTERRA'S BUST HIGHLIGHTS BIG PROBLEMS FOR THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS MASS TRANSIT

Proterra's bust highlights big problems for the future of electric vehicles as mass transit
by Christopher Hutton, Technology Reporter
August 12, 2023 10:49 AM

Proterra, one of the largest electric bus manufacturers in the United States, and its surprise bankruptcy filing reveals the struggles that green-friendly companies face in the current economy.

The California-based electric bus manufacturer filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday, to the surprise of many investors. President Joe Biden had touted the company's environmentally friendly approach to public transportation several times, but it had failed to gain enough traction to justify its operations. While Proterra CEO Gareth Joyce alleged that the company failed due to "various market and macroeconomic headwinds," other economic forces may have contributed to its fall.

Here are some reasons Proterra surprised everyone with its decision to file for bankruptcy.

Buses make some sense to electrify due to them operating in fleets and the overhead cost of electricity staying lower than the petroleum required to use the everyday routes most buses have. However, buses were considered an unreliable source of income in part due to the inconsistent rate by which bus networks typically purchase vehicles. A LOCAL FAVORITE--WESTCHESTER MUSHROOM COMPANY

Delicious Gourmet Mushrooms Grown Locally in High Demand
August 10, 2023----Abby Luby

The meaty and succulent oyster mushroom gracing your restaurant entrée has a very fresh aroma which tells you it was harvested that morning. The mouth-watering mushroom is especially tasty because it was grown locally in a nearby, sustainable, indoor farm in Peekskill known as the Westchester Mushroom Company.

Founded by Austin Schatz, Jonathan Vantman and Benny Liu, the Westchester Mushroom Company was created just after the pandemic. Schatz, who was born and raised in Ossining, became passionate about the environment and worked for Teatown Lake Reservation as marketing manager. He later became the manager of Fable Farm, an Ossining-based farm and food hub dedicated to sustainable agriculture and education.

Vantman and Lui also worked at Fable Farm where all three became dedicated to growing food locally and sustainably---more at Delicious Gourmet Mushrooms Grown Locally in High Demand | The Examiner News
