Public Notice: Recreation Access Update for Croton River and New Croton Dam Pathway

Dear DEP Access Permit Holder:

The recent drawdown of the New Croton Reservoir that started September 6, 2022, leading the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to issue an advisory against recreational activities in the Croton River, has now ended and is no longer in effect.

The reservoir level was lowered to allow DEP to conduct routine inspections of the dam and spillway, which will be ongoing through the middle of October. While water levels will be lower than during the increased release, please be aware that higher than normal releases (75-100 MGD) will continue until the inspections are complete to maintain the current level of the reservoir.

In addition, as part of the inspection process and for the public's safety, the pathway at the top/crest of the dam will be closed to pedestrian and bicycle access from Monday, September 26, through Wednesday, October 5, 2022. Thank you for being understanding as we complete this important work.

VATICAN CITY --Crux News reported that a highly Anticipated trial against Chinese Cardinal Joseph Zen and five other defendants has been delayed, but is expected to move forward this week in Hong Kong, initiating controversial proceedings that could end in heavy fines or jail time, and which has been widely criticized as an attack against democracy. Cardinal Zen, 90, and five others were arrested in May under a Beijing imposed national security law for allegedly colluding with foreign forces. Given his standing in the Catholic Church and his many outspoken criticisms of Beijing, Zen is the most high profile personality to face legal troubles under the national security law, and his trial is seen not only as a direct assault on democracy, but also religious freedom. Zen has had a lengthy ecclesial career. He took his first vows with the Salesians of Saint John Bosco in 1949, and was ordained a priest in the institute in 1961. He was appointed coadjutor bishop of Hong Kong in 1996, and formally assumed the role of bishop in 2002, becoming the leader of Hong Kong’s vast Catholic community, which now numbers around 400,000. He was given a red hat by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006 and retired as bishop of Hong Kong in 2009. Yet throughout his retirement, Zen has grown increasingly critical of Beijing, which broke diplomatic ties with the Vatican in 1951 and created its own Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPCA), an initiative led by the Communist Party, and which has long been seen as a rival to Rome, appointing and ordaining bishops without the pope’s approval and arresting.....

Parents and school districts are being warned about continuing to push back on new sex-education standards being implemented in all New Jersey schools.

Education officials in Gov. Flamboyant Brazilian dancer, singer and actress Carmen Miranda (1909-1955) taught the world how to samba dance. Popular from the 1930s to the 1950s in Brazil and Hollywood, Miranda's most famous songs include 'Tico Tico', 'South American Way', 'Chica Chica Boom Chic', 'Rebola a Bola' and 'I Yi Yi Yi Yi'. She was famous for her exotic outfits featuring a hat decorated with fruit and her tall platform sandals. The peak of her career was during the war years when she starred in eight of her fourteen films.
