Shop Talk: From Working in the Kitchen to Running Her Own
Nearly 20 years ago, Mayra Caguano was working in the kitchen of one of Westchester County’s most iconic restaurants, Peter Pratt’s Inn. She was asked by the inn’s then-owners, Craig Purdy and Jonathan Pratt, if she would work at a new take-out restaurant they planned to open in Croton-on-Hudson called Mex-to-go. Caguano jumped at the chance and it turned out to be the beginning of an adventure that led to her owning and growing Mex-to-go for the past 17 years. THE CROTON CHRONICLE VILLAGE JUSTICE WATKINS, A FOLLOW-UP

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Over the past two issues of The Gazette, Croton Village Justice Sam Watkins startled many villagers with two short letters concerning security in our district schools. He signed them using his official title.

In the first, Dec 7-13 issue, Watkins delivered an alarming warning that there were no armed officers present at the schools, and called for the hiring of armed School Resource Officers (SROs.)
Then, the following week (Dec 14-20 issue), Watkins took it back, writing that he had visited the schools and found that the scenario he had imagined—a “crazed person” entering with a gun and meaning to do harm—was “near impossible in the way I had feared.”
“So I was wrong…” Watkins wrote in the second letter.
What went on here?
The question of SROs in schools, and whether they are the best way to keep students safe, has long been controversial and subject to debate. The Croton Chronicle will publish a report on these questions later this week. The Croton Chronicle | Michael Balter | Substack
