IN THE NEWS: NYPD COP CAN'T BE FIRED FOR NOT HAVING COVID JAB, JUDGE RULES

An NYPD cop who sued over the city’s COVID vaccine mandate can’t be fired for not having the jab, according to a new “precedent-setting” ruling that could help more than 20 other police officers in their cases, The Post has learned. A Manhattan judge said Officer Alexander Deletto, 43, should be allowed to keep his job, noting in a Tuesday ruling that the city gave the Brooklyn cop no explanation for why it rejected his religious exemption application.  MORE AT NYPD cop can't be fired for refusing COVID vaccine: judge (nypost.com)

A Little Lady with a Huge Heart Emerges Triumphant

Eight-year-old Croton-on-Hudson resident Stella Fosgate has one—very impressive—goal for her life: bring joy to the children in our local hospitals.

A few years ago, Stella overcame her own health battle. Her parents, Jamie Fosgate and Jill Frankenfield, noticed she was starting to lose mobility in her legs when she was four years old. Her progress in gymnastics class slowly started to revert, but a swift decline soon set in. Stella’s parents visited every children’s hospital in the Northeast to figure out what was going on....MORE AT https://riverjournalonline.com/around-town/for-the-local-good/a-little-lady-with-a-huge-heart-emerges-triumphant/35704/

Next up from THE EXAMINER NEWS: Birds and Friends Meet as Summer Turns to Fall - September 13, 2022--  Examiner Media By Brian Kluepfel

Last Friday, Saw Mill River Audubon (SMRA) held its annual dinner, this year at the Kittle House in Chappaqua. During the outdoor hors d’oeuvres hour, as I approached the bar, I spotted a ruby-throated hummingbird circling the lantana bushes directly behind. I joked with friends that since this was an Audubon-sanctioned event, I had paid the tiny bird $5 in the parking lot to convince it to attend our party. We all had a laugh while observing this awesome, tiny creature, our only species of hummingbird in the northeastern U.S.

The evening was a joyful reunion of birding friends who had been unable, for the most part, to meet in great number since the pandemic hit in 2020. We shared stories, listened to local authors Scott Craven and Caroline Ranald Curvan and honored three wonderful women who are stepping down from their roles in local conservation this year: SMRA office manager Ellen Heidelberger, Croton Point Nature Center educator and photographer Bonnie Coe and SMRA educator Patricia Mutolo.  READ MORE AT

EDUCATION IN THE NEWS - ABOUT THAT "ENGLISH" LESSON WOKESHEET/WORKSHEET, CONNECTICUT TEACHER 'S CONTOVERSIAL WORKSHEET

Several Connecticut parents spoke out against a worksheet provided by an English teacher in Southington High School on the first day of school that addressed political, gender, and racial issues.  Vocabulary items that appeared on the worksheet included the terms “white privilege,” “indigenous peoples,” “transgender,” “institutional racism,” gender pronouns, the term “Latinx,” as well as other controversial issues. The worksheet appears to show how those terms can be used in writing and includes definitions and proper ways to include a lot of those terms in their writing. WFSB – Channel 3 shared an image of the worksheet on Twitter.   MORE AT Connecticut teacher's controversial worksheet enrages parents (nypost.com)

Rethinking Regents exams: These 10 area educators will help change NY graduation s
tandards--Gary Stern--Rockland/Westchester Journal News

Ten educators from the Lower Hudson Valley will serve on a "blue ribbon commission" that will consider new ways for future students to earn a high school diploma in New York State other than by passing Regents exams.

The state Education Department released the names Tuesday of 64 people, mostly educators, who will serve on the commission, which is due to begin meeting next month. The commission's charge is to consider what a New York high school graduate should know and be able to do − and then to develop ways to measure students' abilities that go beyond standardized tests.
