THE EXAMINER NEWS ON THE RECENT GANNETT LAY-OFFS, A VERY DETAILED PERSPECTIVE BY ADAM STONE

THE EXAMINER NEWS ON THE RECENT GANNETT LAY-OFFS, A VERY DETAILED PERSPECTIVE BY ADAM STONE

Latest Gannett Layoffs Sting Westchester, Communities Across U.S.
Adam Stone

It was two decades ago, in late 2000, and I was 22 years old, seated in my goofy ill-sized suit in the corner office of a Head Honcho at The Journal News, interviewing for a position as a reporter.

Growing up on Long Island, anything north of New York City might as well have been the tip of Niagara Falls, all some vague, fuzzy “upstate.” I didn’t know Westchester County from North Country, New York.

If printed news, for example, wasn’t in Newsday, the Daily News or The New York Times, it generally wasn’t on my newspaper radar screen. So I was just genuinely making innocent conversation when I asked Mr. Honcho a question as my job interview was winding down.

“So what grade might you give The Journal News as an organization?” I asked, or something along those lines.

“A C-minus,” he immediately replied, with a wry grin.

In a moment, I’ll get back to my story, the brutal impact of Friday’s wrenching Gannett layoffs, and my illuminating conversation with Asher Stockler, a local government accountability journalist at The Journal News/lohud, and the secretary for the Hudson Valley News Guild, a union repping the editorial staff at The Journal News, the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Times Herald-Record.. IN THE NEWS: KAROL MARKOWICZ--TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE, DISBAND THE CDC NOW

Dissolve the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Last week, the CDC released updated COVID-19 guidance. The agency now believes we should be taking an individual approach to mitigating our COVID risk. In layman’s terms, we are all Florida 2020 now.

The new guidance suggests ending “test to stay” so kids exposed to someone with COVID-19 can remain in school. Of course, this was only related to known exposure. People are exposed to COVID all the time, but only children who were aware of that exposure were punished. Kids lost so much throughout the pandemic because of terrible, irrational CDC guidance like this.

The fresh guidance also says people without symptoms no longer need to be routinely tested.

And the CDC permits us to come within six feet of each other again. Finally! Husbands, tell your wives it’s on!

But most important, the agency has finally faced some truths about the vaccine that it should have long ago. “CDC’s COVID-19 prevention recommendations no longer differentiate based on a person’s vaccination status because breakthrough infections occur.” And it’s admitted that “persons who have had COVID-19 but are not vaccinated have some degree of protection against severe illness from their previous infection.”

Cities across the country fired teachers, firefighters, health-care staffers, police officers, sanitation workers and so many others because they refused to get vaccinated. Many of these people had worked through the early days of the pandemic — and contracted COVID many times over — while we baked banana bread and patted ourselves on the back for ordering from Uber Eats. Now the CDC acknowledges this was the wrong thing to do. Whoopsie!  MORE FROM MARCOWICZ HERE.

ANNUAL REQUEST--BACK TO SCHOOL: PENCIL CASES, THREE-RING BINDERS, LUNCH BOXES, CROTON & MORE, A NOSTALGIC LOOK

Welcome to The New Everything Croton--a collection of all things Croton, our history, our homes, our issues, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

The Seasonal aisle at Croton SHOPRITE is stocked with everything you need for back to school and college dorm stuff too.  That reminded us how much the "Back to school" shopping list has changed...and prompted Everything Croton's Annual Nostalgic Look at Back to School.

(Click on the photos and links.)

In the 60's and beyond, it was often time to shop  for new shoes.  And you could generally count on at least one trip to Woolworth's...in the Beach Shopping Center of Peekskill....ah, those three ring loose-leaf binders.

And remember those gummed "hole reinforcements".....some of us can still taste the glue.

You'll need a lunch box too---and while most are being made of (OH-NO!) that dreaded plastic these days---and a far cry from the ones you may remember--some things never change---and that's the latest television or movie characters who grace the "lids".

See what we mean with some vintage lunch boxes too---check out your editor's vintage lunch box Flickr photostream----Bonanza, Lost in Space, The Munsters, The Jetsons and more!

Good food makes great memories...and there would always be those FOODSTOPS EVERY CROTON COLLEGE STUDENT MISSES.

Featured are the Croton Mini Deli, Croton Colonial Diner, Bagels on Hudson and four more hotspots.

And of course for many of us, back to school meant a new uniform (if you attended Catholic school) or anything else you might need from Elliott's in the Upper Village.

IN THE NEWS: ATLANTIC OP-ED CLAIMS CATHOLIC ROSARY HAS BECOME "AN EXTREMIST SYMBOL"

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

As praying the rosary is an important part of life for many Catholics---and the Knights of Columbus have a long history of charitable endeavors just about everywhere---this article is particularly disturbing. Nevertheless, it should be read.  You are encouraged to do so.

Atlantic op-ed claims Catholic rosary has become ‘an extremist symbol’

The author claimed, 'Catholics are a growing contingent of Christian nationalism

Warning that Catholics are a "growing contingent of Christian nationalism," Panneton commented that "Catholic imagery now blends freely with staple alt-right memes that romanticize ancient Rome or idealize the traditional patriarchal family."

'Atlantic contributor Daniel Panneton declared that the Catholic rosary has become a "symbol" of religious radicalism.

The rosary is a string of beads or knots used by Catholics as they pray a sequence of prayers, but one writer warned they have taken on a far darker meaning in modern times. "Just as the AR-15 rifle has become a sacred object for Christian nationalists in general, the rosary has acquired a militaristic meaning for radical-traditional (or ‘rad trad’) Catholics," Panneton claimed in the Sunday piece titled, "How the Rosary Became an Extremist Symbol.".......Panneton slammed an entire online ecosystem for disseminating imagery featuring Christian warriors both historical and modern, suggesting that "social-media pages are saturated with images of rosaries draped over firearms, warriors in prayer, Deus Vult (‘God wills it’) crusader memes, and exhortations for men to rise up and become Church Militants."  MORE AT
