ANNUAL VETERANS DAY LUNCHEON AT THE CROTON YACHT CLUB 2022

On Friday, November 11th , 2022, the members of the Croton Yacht Club will celebrate Veterans Day at their 6 Elliott Way clubhouse by once again opening its doors and hearts to Croton’s community of veterans and active military to thank them for their service and sacrifices made on our behalf.

The event will commence at noon and include a brief ceremony followed by a luncheon which will be free of charge for all village veterans and spouses, surviving spouses of veterans, active military and spouses. To offset the luncheon expenses, it is suggested that all non-military attendees donate $15 per adult and $5 per teen over 16, children are free. Any net proceeds realized from the luncheon will be donated to Croton Harmon VFW Post 5197.

IN THE NEWS - SOCIAL CONTAGION NOT BIOLOGY IS CAUSING TRANSGENDER SURGE

The social push to make gender confusion trendy and cool has resulted in more children becoming gender-confused or, at the very least, pretending to be so they can receive validation from “tolerant” adults.

Data posted to Twitter from Montgomery County Public Schools helpfully illustrate this phenomenon. According to voluntary response surveys during the 2019-20 school year, 35 students in the MCPS system claimed to be gay or transgender. That number rose to 108 in the 2020-21 school year (when the pandemic started) and 239 in the 2021-22 school year before falling back to 41 in the 2022-23 school year. EMPIRE OF THE SELWYNS (AND MARGARET MAYO MENTION TOO)

For guys who DID so much, the name Edgar Selwyn (Edgar Simon, 1875-1944) and Archibald “Arch” Selwyn (1877-1959) are today remembered for surprising little. Let’s fix that!

Classic movie buffs may know that they partnered with Samuel Goldfish to form Goldwyn Productions (the name formed by merging their surnames) and that Goldfish then changed his name to Goldwyn (because, let’s face it Goldfish is a silly name for a person to have). Goldwyn Pictures, founded 1916, produced vehicles starring Mabel Normand, Will Rogers, Mae Marsh, and others before being absorbed by MGM in 1924.

Broadway buffs may know the name from the Selwyn Theatre on 42nd Street, built 1918, and acquired by the Roundabout Company in the 1990s and renamed the American Airlines Theatre in homage to its sponsor. It was one of three Broadway theatres the Selwyns built, which amazingly all still exist in one form or another, the majority of historical Broadway venues all having fallen prey to the wrecking ball. In time, the Selwyns built a nationwide theatre chain; your city may still have one........

IN THE NEWS: INFLATION HOTTER THAN EXPECTED IN SEPTEMBER IN PRODUCER PRICE INDEX

Inflation hotter than expected in September in producer price index--Inflation, as measured by producer wholesale prices, came in a bit hotter than expected at 8.5% for the year ending in September, according to a report Wednesday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics

Trans Women Must Register For Selective Service, Trans Men Are Exempt---Identifying as a female won’t get biological males out of registering for the military draft, even under the pro-trans Biden administration. The Selective Service policy requires all males between the ages of 18 and 25 to register and explicitly includes trans women. IT'S INTERNATIONAL TOP SPINNING DAY WHICH REMINDED US OF......"MY SUMMER STORY"

It's Interational Spinning Top Day---you can read more about that here----but it reminded us of the little known sequel to 1983 film A Christmas Story.

It's called MY SUMMER STORY---and it was also known as IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY---Like A CHRISTMAS STORY, it is based on semi-autobiographical stories by Jean Shepherd, primarily from his book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.

The opening makes direct reference to the events of A Christmas Story, and the ending narration strongly parallels it; productions delay forced most of the characters to be recast. Charles Grodin stars as the Old Man (Mr. Parker), Mary Steenburgen plays Mrs. Parker and Kieran Culkin as Ralphie. Shepherd provides the narration, just as he had done for A Christmas Story.Plot

The film takes place in the summer of 1941, after the events of A Christmas Story, which took place in December 1940. It has several plot lines, one each for 10-year-old Ralphie, his father, and his mother, followed by a recurring subplot involving him and his dad on a fishing trip, that proves frequently fruitless until a single night when all fish are caught. There's also an epic quest for a "killer top"---and eventual battle of spinning tops---involving the school bully.

This is an utterly charming film---and one for the bucket list.
