In a nutshell:  METHODS

We formed an international collaborative group of clinicians who contributed to an international case series to describe the presentation, clinical course, and outcomes of polymerase-chain-reaction–confirmed monkeypox virus infections.

RESULTS - We report 528 infections diagnosed between April 27 and June 24, 2022, at 43 sites in 16 countries. Overall, 98% of the persons with infection were gay or bisexual men, 75% were White, and 41% had human immunodeficiency virus infection; the median age was 38 years. Transmission was suspected to have occurred through sexual activity in 95% of the persons with infection.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was roundly mocked on social media Tuesday after she put her arms behind her back to imitate being handcuffed following her arrest at a pro-abortion demonstration outside the Supreme Court.  The Bronx and Queens Democratic lawmaker was gently escorted away by a Capitol Police officer — along with fellow city Rep. Carolyn Maloney — after blocking traffic outside the court building.. AOC kept up the charade of being restrained for a few steps before raising her fist to supporters watching from the sidewalk. She then crossed her wrists behind her back again in the faux handcuffed position. The clip spread like wildfire and conservative commentators were quick to chime in. Howard Schultz should have listened to me.

A decade ago, I wrote a book in which I observed that one of New York City’s most infamous and intractable municipal problems — its lack of public restrooms — had been in part solved by the private sector, and by one business in particular: Starbucks. That was the case in my neighborhood, at least: On any given afternoon, the Starbucks at Park Row and Beekman would have a restroom line ten or twenty long, mostly European tourists carrying Century 21 shopping bags — it must have been in a guidebook somewhere.

It was a classic case of the private sector creating a public good while bringing in new customers. But the public sector has to do its part, too, when it comes to basic services such as public safety. Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz has been a lifelong champion of the kind of sentimental urban progressivism that has helped to turn the public spaces of cities such as Portland and Philadelphia — and, unhappily, New York — into part-time homeless shelters and makeshift psychiatric wards.  And now his business is paying the price for that. British comedian Peter Sellers (1925-1980) was an incredibly versatile actor. He played Chief Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther films with as much ease as Clare Quilty in Lolita (1962).
