FROM A RECENT EDITION OF THE GAZETTE...To the editor:

When I was in school, we used to try to get the teacher to say the name of the capital of Thailand, or the seventh planet from the sun, or the name of that lake between Bolivia and Peru. I grew out of it, but a few years ago I attended a lecture by a psycholinguist whose use of the words “f—k” and “s---t” brought stifled titters from the audience. Given that this was a lecture about the effect of taboo speech on the amygdala, the audience reaction surprised some attendees. READ MORE AT
