Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
THE FOLLOWING LETTER APPEARS IN THE GAZETTE; IT IS RE-PRINTED HERE WITH THE AUTHOR'S PERMISSION
To the editor:
Croton residents have become accustomed to the moral bankruptcy of the so-called religious leaders in our community. In the last few years, the Lutheran church has taken the lead, and once again they don’t disappoint.
For local consumption, we are told that Croton Lutherans “stand with our Jewish siblings” and that “Rabbi Jaech is a dear friend.” At the same time, church Bishop Eaton has issued two statements on the “Israel-Hamas War.” If you want to find out what Croton Lutherans really think of their “siblings” Bishop Eaton’s statements are worth reading online in their entirety.
I don’t hold individuals accountable for actions taken by their ancestors. But someone speaking on behalf of an institution is a different matter. The Lutheran church has a long history of antisemitism tracing back to Martin Luther himself, and in its German homeland it has a shameful history of silence during the Nazi era. The origins spring from the belief that having rejected the Messiah (Jesus Christ), the Jews are deserving of whatever happens to them.
The October 7 terrorist attack on the Jews resulted in 1200 deaths and over 200 hostages are still beingheld by Hamas. Women were raped, infants were slaughtered in their nursery, and parts of the attack were livestreamed: Hamas is proud of what it did. The attacks took place near the border, and in the wake of the Hamas terrorists many ordinary Gaza residents crossed into Israel on October 7 to loot and kill.
To Bishop Eaton, the fault lies squarely with the victims: “The power exerted against all Palestinian people… must be called out as a root cause of what we are witnessing.”
Has Bishop Eaton ever before downplayed a rape by saying we must call out the “root cause” of the rape, let alone implied that the woman is responsible for being raped? After the Sandy Hook school massacre, did Bishop Eaton excuse the killer by saying we must call out the “root cause?”
As Bishop Eaton slips into a Hugo Boss jacket and pops open a can of Fanta to reminisce about the return of the old days, the rest of us should think about the 200+ hostages still being held in Gaza. Weshould pay attention to the ongoing use of hospitals and schools to shield Hamas activity. And we must never forget what happened on October 7.
