RAPINOE---COACH ANDONOVSKI---CALLED OUT BY FANS AFTER LOSS TO SWEDEN

Following the USWNT’s loss in penalty kicks to Sweden on Sunday in Melbourne, there was plenty of backlash from the team’s supporters. But although the U.S. fell 5-4 in penalties after a 0-0 draw through regulation and extra time, forward Megan Rapinoe and manager Vlatko Andonovski received much of the early reaction, and there were virtually no positive vibes being sent to either. INVASIVES UPDATE--PARASITIC WORM--MYSTERIOUS NEW PEST HAS SCIENTISTS SOUNDING THE ALARM

Forget the lantern fly. A mysterious new pest has scientists sounding the alarm.

Story by Rich Schapiro •8h

SOMEWHERE IN WILDWOOD STATE PARK, New York — Matt Borden, a plant pathologist, had walked less than 50 yards into the forest when he froze in place and looked skyward.

He was standing in a thicket of beech trees in mid-July, but their leaves were almost all gone. Those still remaining were crinkled and leathery — a telltale symptom of a parasitic worm wreaking havoc in forests stretching from Maine to Virginia. MORE AT Forget the lantern fly. CROTON’S HIGH BRIDGE--A POST FROM THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY FB PAGE Did you know that a covered wooden bridge once soared above the Croton River, downstream from Silver Lake? It was built in 1842 over a place called Deep Hole, said to be the deepest part of the river. (CLICK ON THE PHOTO.)  Learn about this beautiful bridge, the flour and iron mills that were located nearby, the Prohibition-era raids on the Nordica Drive speakeasies (and a few ghost stories!) during the 125th Anniversary Boat Flotilla—a floating parade hosted by Croton’s 125th Anniversary Committee.

Saturday, August 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your own boat or rent one. Registration is $10 per person and includes lunch. Each boater must register individually. BERENSEN---KIDS ALMOST NEVER TRANSMITTED COVID IN SCHOOLS, MAJOR NEW STUDY SHOWS

Kids almost NEVER transmitted Covid in schools, a major new study shows
The research should end what's left of the pathetic rear-guard effort to defend school closures - or any mitigation measures like making kids wear masks

ALEX BERENSON--AUG 6, 2023

Children almost never passed Covid infections in school, a study published Friday reveals.

In fall 2021, in four Massachusetts school districts with 18,000 children, researchers found 44 potential cases of in-school transmission.

You read that right.

18,000 students. 34 schools. Four months. And 44 Covid infections - including no infections of teachers or other staff members.

Throughout 2020 and 2021, as parents pressed with increasing urgency to reopen classrooms, teachers unions and Democratic politicians warned in-school Covid transmission would lead to waves of death. “Teachers are so worried about returning to school that they’re preparing wills,” CNN infamously wrote on July 16, 2020.

In reality, schools were among the safest possible places for students and teachers during Covid, this study suggests.

The study, which ran in the peer-reviewed journal JAMA Health Forum, is both nearly useless and vital. MORE AT Kids almost NEVER transmitted Covid in schools, a major new study shows (substack.com)

WILL THEY EVER COME CLEAN ABOUT THE DAMAGE THEY CAUSED MARK OSHINSKIE

Will They Ever Come Clean About the Damage They Caused? BY MARK OSHINSKIE AUGUST 5, 2023

Over the past few years, two immigrants in their mid-fifties became my friends. These guys are among the gentlest spirits that I’ve known, though one tells me he was a boxer back in the day and he works like a beast with a pick and shovel. The other man speaks five languages and knows far more about Botany than I do.

While both men are delightful to interact with, each binge drinks every so often. One drinks until he passes out at the community gardens I manage and sometimes ends up in the hospital, drying out, for multiple days. The other becomes annoyingly loud and manic and does stupid stuff that causes him to lose jobs. He also suffers broken bones in unexplained tumbles. Both have visibly damaged their bodies by drinking excessively and seem likely to die before their time.

When I talk to these two about a given alcohol-fueled episode, they initially deny that they had drank to excess. After I mention the contrary evidence provided by the above outcomes, one admitted that, well, he might have had a beer or two. The other would only cop to imbibing a small amount of an alcohol-based herbal tincture remedy.

Please.

We’ve all seen this same denialism regarding other instances of misbehavior. Initially, the transgressor denies any wrongdoing. Then, when confronted with specific proof, he understates the magnitude and/or frequency of the misconduct. These incomplete, and thus ultimately dishonest, admissions assuage his guilt and allow him to, at least in his own mind, save face and continue his self-deception. Like the child who hides his eyes and thinks you can’t see him because he can’t see you, the self-deceiving misrepresenter thinks he’s also deceiving the listener.

After 41 months, Coronamania exponents find themselves in the same place as unrecovering alcoholics. For nearly three-and-a-half years, they’ve wildly lied about Covid’s danger.  SEE MORE AT Will They Ever Come Clean About the Damage They Caused? ⋆ Brownstone Institute
