OBITUARY AND SERVICE INFO FOR VERA P. MUNSON

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short Everything Croton.

Vera Munson passed away on February 28th 2024 in Croton-on-Hudson at the age of 106.

Vera was born in New York City on March 17th 1917. She was the daughter of Joseph and Ellen Moje and grew up in Croton since the age of 12. Vera attended school in the now municipal building. Hers was the first class to graduate from Croton-Harmon High School in 1935.

Vera married her high school sweetheart, Burlin Munson, in 1942 when he was in the Army. They had three children, Terry Cook, Diane Robbins (Richard) and Joseph (Wendy). She was a stay-at-home mom who was her children's ice skating teacher, swimming coach, Girl Scout leader and even taught CYO basketball at Holy Name of Mary. Many will remember Vera as the “walker”. Every nice day she could be seen walking through Croton Harmon. She never failed to attend parades, dedications and veteran’s remembrances.

When her husband died in 1969 at age 52, Vera worked for a small insurance company in Ossining. Being an avid reader, she then found her perfect calling at the Ossining Library. She worked there for 11 years until age 66. Upon retirement, she volunteered at the Croton Library for 20 years.

In her 106 years, the word most used for Vera is “kind”. More at

Many thanks to BA for the heads-up:  Volunteer for the Hudson River Striped Bass Cooperative Angler Program

Here's how it works:Fill out a logbook we provide or record your trips on your smartphone using DEC's Hudson River online logbook (PDF) whenever you fish on the tidal Hudson River (by boat or on the shore);
Record general location, time, gear used, what you caught (or if you didn't catch anything); and
Return the logbook when you are done fishing.

Join today! For more information on the angler program and instructions on installing the Survey123 App to access the online logbook, visit Hudson River Cooperative Angler webpage or email hudsonangler@dec.ny.gov.

Note: If you primarily fish for striped bass in New York waters south of the George Washington Bridge, the DEC has a separate Striped Bass Cooperative Anglers Program.

MASK CASE DISMISSED!

A federal court dismissed a case Tuesday against Republican Iowa Gov. Kimberly Reynolds’ prohibition of mask mandate in school districts across the state, official documents showed.  The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit found “persuasive” the argument that “the general risks associated with COVID-19, even though COVID-19 remains an ever-present concern in society, are not enough to show ‘imminent and substantial’ harm,” court papers showed in part....this decision marks the end of the case.  READ MORE AT Federal Court Dismisses Case Against Governor Who Prohibited Mask Mandates In Schools | The Daily Caller
