LORNA DOONES AND THE GIFT OF LIFE
10/23/2022 12:14:51 PM

When I was an undergraduate (a long, long time ago), one day I walked to the campus library and noticed that tables had been set up for a blood drive. The signs encouraging people to donate blood read: “Give the gift of life.”

To be honest, it was not the inspiring suggestion to “give the gift of life” that caught my attention. I was drawn to the table set up for blood donors to sit down and recover after their donation. At that table were packages and packages of Lorna Doone shortbread cookies.

I had never given blood before, but the cookies made me consider doing so. My student budget for groceries was meager and I could never afford to buy Lorna Doone cookies in the supermarket.

So I made my first blood donation. It did not hurt that much, and I felt fine afterwards, especially after I ate a few cookies!

I continued to give blood regularly as a college student – again, motivated largely by the cookies. And, on occasion, I donated after I graduated when the opportunity presented itself.

It was not until I moved here and joined Temple Israel nearly thirty years ago that I began to donate regularly. At that time, Rosalind Morrissey, may her memory be a blessing, inspired me to donate blood. Rosalind founded a long-running blood drive in the Croton community, a blood drive she organized after her son Evan lost his battle with cancer. READ MORE AT

IN THE NEWS: THE ATLANTIC BEGS FOR COVID AMNESTY FOR LIBERALS

The Atlantic Begs for COVID Amnesty for Liberals.......excerpted:

The reason why there's the sudden turn of wishing unvaccinated people to be treated as lepers to "please forgive and forget" is because many of those who cheered on the authoritarian response have been proven over and over to be wrong. They know they caused harm and struggle to large portions of the country, and it was all for nothing. While it is true we didn't know much about the virus in March 2020, we understood a lot more by the summer, and yet, Democrats still pushed for lockdowns to continue.

It's not that the reaction to the unknown is the issue. It was the reaction to the known. There should be consequences for those in charge who implemented absurd measures like banning outdoor dining. People were labeled as conspiracy theorists for suggesting the virus originated out of the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, a theory that has only gained credibility as time has gone on. The White House promised a winter of illness and death for the unvaccinated that never materialized. Mask mandates were put on toddlers in order to go to school. Businesses closed, never to reopen. Senior citizens died alone.  READ IT ALL AT

IN THE NEWS: ELI LILLY TACITLY WITHDRAWS THREAT TO PUNISH PRO-LIFE STATE

Eli Lilly and Company has tacitly backed down on its threat to punish Indiana for its pro-life law, which the pharmaceutical corporation promised to do this summer.

Last week, Lilly announced a $92.5 million investment in Purdue University to create a talent pipeline of college students over the next 10 years. The company’s CEO, David Ricks, said the partnership will “help to keep our state’s best and brightest in Indiana, furthering Lilly’s ability to make life better for millions of people.”

That’s a far cry from Eli Lilly’s blustering talk in August after Gov. Eric Holcomb signed legislation that closed down all abortion facilities and banned 98% of abortions after 10 weeks of pregnancy.

The abortion law “will hinder Lilly’s — and Indiana’s — ability to attract diverse scientific, engineering and business talent from around the world,” the company claimed in August.Major corporation tacitly withdraws threat to punish pro-life state (washingtonexaminer.com)

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

FROM THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY FB PAGE - THE HARMON PLAYHOUSE GHOST

Although most Croton ghost stories date to the 18th and 19th centuries, the tales about the ghost haunting the Harmon Playhouse—said to be Clifford Harmon himself—appear to date to the 1940s.

Now a private home on Truesdale Drive, adjacent to the home that was the Nikko Inn, the Playhouse hosted theatrical productions from roughly 1908 into the 1930s until it was purchased by Dr. Samuel Kahn, a controversial psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who had studied with Freud.

While living in the house the Kahns became interested in psychics and invited one to visit. Accompanying her was Hans Holzer, an Austrian-American author and parapsychologist. He wrote more than 120 books on supernatural and occult subjects as well as several plays, musicals, films, and documentaries, and he hosted a television show, Ghost Hunter.

After the psychic demonstrated her abilities to the Kahns and a group of their friends and neighbors, Holzer spoke to Mrs. Kahn who said, “You know, I think we’ve got a ghost.”

“He’s a whistling ghost,” she confided, “always whistling the same song . . . a happy tune. I guess he must be a happy ghost!” Mrs. Kahn explained that although her husband had never heard the whistling, he heard strange raps in their bedroom, late at night. The previous winter they both heard loud knocking on their front door, but when they opened it there was no one there.

As Holzer questioned the Kahns about the history of the house and their experiences he became convinced that the ghost was Clifford Harmon himself, who the Kahns said—incorrectly—had been murdered by the Nazis during World War II.

A medium was later brought in to communicate with Harmon and other spirits in the house. Holzer pieced together their stories of a lost love between Harmon and a woman and jealous man who would knock on the front door.

In 1975 the house was purchased by Mike and Lucy Martineau. Mike was a talent agent, who represented groups like the Commodores and Average White Band, and Lucy was a model.

They had heard the ghost stories before they bought the house, but thought the whole thing was very funny . . . until strange things started to happen.  READ MORE AT Facebook

A TRUE CROTON MYSTERY: WHERE ARE THE DEVIL'S FOOTPRINTS?

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

THE MYSTERY OF THE DEVIL'S FOOTPRINTS

Where are the Devil’s Footprints?

This simple question was recently posed to a group of Crotonites—experts in local history, in Hudson Valley geology, and some people who grew up here and explored all of Croton’s old ruins and haunted places in their youth. They all had the same reply: “What footprints?” READ MORE OF THIS FASCINATING ARTICLE HERE http://crotonhistory.org/2013/11/12/the-mystery-of-the-devils-footprints/

FAUCI....LET'S ROLL THE TAPE

Outgoing White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci denied responsibility for school closures during the pandemic, insisting in an interview on Sunday he had "nothing to do" with it.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the government's chief spokesman during the COVID-19 pandemic, was asked by ABC News' Jonathan Karl whether it was a "mistake" to keep schools closed for as long as they were.

"I don’t want to use the word ‘mistake,’ Jon, because if I do, it gets taken out of the context that you’re asking me the question on," Fauci replied. "And I don't want to do that because that's just happened too many times over the last years with me."

Asked if the country paid "too high a price" with the government's pandemic response, Fauci said, "We should realize, and have realized, that there will be deleterious collateral consequences when you do something like that." MORE AT

FROM THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY FB PAGE - VOICES AT DEEP HOLE

The waters of the Croton River below the old Nikko Inn are called Deep Hole because it’s said to be the deepest part of the river. An 1890 newspaper article about a boy drowning there calls it “a very curious place. The average depth of the stream is only several feet, five at most, but this hole where the boy was drowned is about 200 feet long, 75 feet wide and from 50 to 80 feet deep. It appears to be a cave of some sort, or a fissure between two rocks.”

In 1907, a Croton Journal article about the old wire factory near Fireman’s Island and High Bridge—the covered wooden bridge that once crossed the river on the cliffs at Deep Hole—speculated that those who drowned “were probably caught in the tangled wire which had been thrown into the river. At this time it is a lonely spot and is never frequented at night as there is no way to cross the river, except by rowboat, but people who have been obliged to pass the abutments, state that they have heard voices of a man and woman, but only at the hour between 12 and one midnight. The voice of the man is deep bass, and he seems to be chiding the woman, who is pleading with him. The words cannot be distinguished, but the voices can be heard distinctly. Whether the narrative be true or false, no one seems to care to investigate.”

IN THE NEWS--PAUL PELOSI ATTACK, UPDATED, MIRANDA DEVINE

Biden and Democrats spin the attack on Paul Pelosi to smear Trump, MAGA backers By Miranda Devine

Joe Biden lost no time blaming ultra-mega-semi-fascist-MAGA-Donald-Trump supporters for the strange attack on Paul Pelosi in his San Francisco home early Friday.

Barack Obama did the same, using a rally in Michigan for failed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to rail against “politicians who work to stir up division to try to make us angry and afraid of one another for their own advantage.”

So did Hillary Clinton, who tweeted: “The Republican Party and its mouthpieces now regularly spread hate and deranged conspiracy theories. It is shocking, but not surprising, that violence is the result.”

So did Kamala Harris, demanding people “speak out against hate.”

So did every other Democrat surrogate, like Hollywood director Rob Reiner who tweeted: “Donald Trump is 100% responsible for this and Jan.6.”

So did all the Democrat-aligned media who delivered the same talking points in unison, along with dubiously sourced facts and a false depiction of the alleged attacker as a MAGA Republican in defiance of his drug-addicted hippy lifestyle, Green Party membership and the BLM and LGBT signs festooned across his sometime residence, a nudist commune in San Francisco’s gay Castro district.

It was a full-court press designed to flip the attack on the Speaker’s husband into an “October surprise” as Dems look down the barrel of a brutal shellacking from the voters next week.

It was their last desperate effort — because they have nothing else, apart from abortion — to smear their political opponents as violent “insurrectionists” and election “deniers” who are a threat to democracy. MORE AT
