LOHUD--CLIMBING DEATH TOLL MAY INCLUDE AMERICANS

The rapidly intensifying war between Israel and Palestinian militants roared through a second day Sunday, with the Israeli Security Cabinet formally declaring war and the death toll closing in on 1,000 — a figure that may include some Americans.

More than 600 Israelis have been killed since Hamas militants began their assault Saturday on almost two dozen Israeli towns and army bases, ZAKA, a volunteer group that handles human remains after terror attacks, told Israeli media. ZAKA said 250 bodies were found at a music festival near the Gaza border.

Dozens of Israelis, and apparently some Americans, were taken hostage, officials on both sides said. Palestinian authorities said more than 300 fighters and civilians have been killed by Israeli counterattacks in Gaza. Each side reported thousands of wounded. ‘Several Americans’ Possibly Taken Hostage, Killed After Deadly Attack In Israel: Blinken

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday that “several Americans” have possibly been killed or taken hostage in the surprise attack launched Saturday by Islamist group Hamas on Israel.

Hamas launched its most serious attack on Israel since the 1970s with 5,000 rockets and gunmen attacks at daybreak Saturday. The first wave of rockets launched at around 6:30 a.m. from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory. The Israeli government issued a state of war alert as the attacks continued.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country was “at war,” which the Israeli Security Cabinet subsequently affirmed when confirming the state of war. The attack killed at least 700 people in Israel, including 44 soldiers, a death toll not seen in decades.
