Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.THE FOLLOWING LETTER APPEARS IN THE MOST RECENT GAZETTE:
Letter to the editor,
Election day is next week, but not really in Croton-on-the Hudson. It will be a rubber stamp exercise for the ruling regime.
Since the village election was moved and linked to the national election cycle our local government has suffered, under one party rule. This was purportedly done to save money, but in the end that was just a diversion. We all know that one party rule over a long time leads to cronyism and favors to the ruling party.
A local village election allowed for robust discussions of Village issues. It allowed residents to debate the pros and cons of opposing views. That no longer exists in the Village. There are even limitations of how residents may engage the Village Board at meetings. The classic example was to move non agenda discussion items to the bottom of the meeting agenda and limit the resident to five minutes.
It might be time for a change. Many new residents are not aware of Village issues and since many are aligned with only one party they will vote a straight party line, regardless of the qualifications of the candidate. Perhaps a message could be sent by splitting the vote and voting for alternative candidates. You can also write in the name of someone who could be a better candidate. Write to your elected officials and ask to have the Village election moved back to March where it once was. Longevity and recycling of board members is not good government.
We are on a non sustainable path financially in this Village. Future pension obligations and bonds of $30M against a $19M budget cannot continue. We are one the highest taxed villages in the country. Yet we continue to spend beyond our means and endanger the future of the Village. The agenda currently favors party over Village in my opinion.
I believe I’m a rational, independent thinker. I’m not registered to any party. I encourage residents to follow the events of the Village and speak up. I’d love to have a cup of coffee with you to discuss the Village affairs.. I’m pretty easy to find.
