Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton-on-Hudson: our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

REMEMBERING ALLEN FUNT, THE CROTON CONNECTION.....one of Croton's most notable residents...

Allen Funt, who died this date in 1999...an American television producer, director, writer and television personality best known as the creator and host of Candid Camera from the 1940s to 1980s, as either a regular television show or a television series of specials. Its most notable run was from 1960 to 1967 on CBS.

THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA AND THE "LAND BACK MOVEMENT", THE GAZETTE

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

The following letter appears in this week's Gazette:

To the editor:

Implementation of the “Land Back movement” by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has caused some discussion in Croton. While it is not clear if the church in Harmon will be one of the locations considered to be given back as reparations to indigenous nations, I think the location would be a great site for a Native American interpretive center and event space.

If the land is not given back, the tax assessors should take a look at the propriety of the tax exemptions at the location. Those exemptions are from a time when churches were focused on spiritual matters. Today many “church” groups are political clubs with stained glass windows, and ELCA is no exception.

I have no problem with forming a group to advocate for (or against) a national gun registry and to support (or oppose) proposed federal laws such as the ELCA-endorsed S.66 or H.R.8. But such granular involvement in Congressional matters is political advocacy, and contributions to a political advocacy group are not tax-deductable.

In our local area, the New York Synod wants ELCA to work for “repeal of the 2017 federal tax law.” Apparently the limit on SALT deductibility is an affront to the Almighty: Imagine sitting through the sermon on the Sunday before April 15. Pastors used to be concerned for your immortal soul, now they find the tax code more relevant to parishioners.

How is lobbying to change the Internal Revenue Code a religious activity? The local church in Harmon is named “Our Saviour” and I seem to recall that is the same guy who said (Mark 12:17) “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” The irony of an organization with a $68 million annual budget funded by tax-exempt donations advocating for repeal of the 2017 tax law is lost on ELCA.

The church is open in its political advocacy, and opposes curbs on legislative lobbying. When an immigration bill was being debated, ELCA sent out an email with the phone number for the Capitol switchboard and told church members to call their Congressperson and “request that they vote for passage of H.R.6.” It is certainly appropriate for a religious body to call for tolerance and charity towards migrants. To call for specific laws regarding the procedure for naturalization and scope of coverage is a political issue. In our time, charity and politics are often interchangeable. That was not always so, nor should we accept this new attitude.

An independent faith-based financial planner called Thrivent (formerly Aid Association for Lutherans) gives clients the opportunity to direct company charitable contributions. When Thrivent changed the policy to prohibit direction of company contributions to organizations whose “principal purpose” is “to influence law [or] policy” ELCA objected.

Really? The church sees no difference between donating to buy food for homeless families and donating to a political group?

A blatant example is the church’s advocacy for DC statehood. Whatever the merits of statehood, it is about as fundamentally political as a policy can be. There is no basis in the Torah for a position on how residents of a nation’s federal district should be represented in the legislature.

From the beginning of time, God chose some people to treat differently: in fact, he even called them his Chosen People (Deuteronomy 14:2). Nor is there support for ELCA’s position in the New Testament: When Jesus was tried, it was by a provincial governor. The reason Jesus could not demand trial in Rome (as Paul would later do) is precisely because Roman citizenship was not granted to all citizens.

Martin Luther himself had issues with ecclesiastic authority, but believed in the submission to political hierarchy which was customary in his time. Inspired by Luther’s writings, the peasants became the activists of their day. A horrified Luther responded by writing a book with the understated title: Against the Murderous, Thieving Hordes of Peasants (Luther would have loved Twitter) in which he admonished the peasants to be “true and faithful, submissive and obedient to their rulers.”

Were Martin Luther to return as pastor in Harmon, I doubt he would be advocating for legislation to make the District of Columbia the 51st state.

Even if one can find support in Holy Scripture for the proposition that the Almighty has given each of us a right to proportional representation within a representative democracy (something unheard of for most of human existence), then why not carve out a small federal district around the National Mall and give the rest back to Maryland? As ELCA itself admits, retrocession is what happened in 1846 with the land that is present-day Arlington County VA.

If the church was arguing for a Biblically-grounded human right to participate in government (despite there being no such thing), that might be acceptable. But the church argues for a specific solution of statehood “including proportional representation in both houses.” In other words, ELCA wants to ensure that there are 2 Democratic Senators to tip the balance of power in the US Senate. Much as you may want to see this goal achieved, I don’t think any of us have ever viewed the DC statehood debate as having a theological basis.

ELCA says it is “Inspired by the Holy Spirit.” It seems to me that ELCA is more inspired by the Electoral College map.

If The View was polite, boring, and had a website and charitable status—it would be ELCA. I have nothing against political activism, nor reading dull position papers. And the church makes some valid points about US policy and laws: their analysis of the Palestine question is simplistic but worth reading. I also am sympathetic to the economic reality of an American populace which increasingly finds the spiritual aspect of organized religion to be irrelevant.

Moving into advocacy—especially partisan advocacy—is a plausible short-term strategy to get people into the pews. In the long term, trading eternal truths for popular fads is not likely to maintain congregant numbers. ELCA is not the first religious body to head down this path.

My philosophical objection is to conflating political positions with religious belief: this does a disservice to both and is frankly disrespectful of the spirituality of many of our fellow citizens. My practical objection is to granting tax exemptions to what is essentially a political group. If God is truly dead, then his earthly representatives can start paying their fair share of taxes.

EDUCATION ISSUES IN THE NEWS TEACHER PAMELA RICARD WINS $95K OVER PUSH TO DECEIVE PARENTS ABOUT STUDENTS' GENDER IDENTITY

A retired Kansas teacher won $95,000 in a lawsuit against the Geary County school district after administrators attempted to force her to deceive parents about their student’s gender identity.  Pamela Ricard, 58, argued that school administrators in Kansas had demanded that she use students’ preferred gender pronouns in classrooms, but avoid using those terms when speaking to parents. Ricard sued, arguing such deception was against her Christian beliefs.  READ MORE AT Pamela Ricard wins $95K in student gender identity suit (nypost.com)

BLM IN THE NEWS: THE LATEST CHAPTER, YET ANOTHER GROUP LEADER ACCUSED OF STEALING.....

......After leading the outrage in 2020 over George Floyd's death and collecting tens of millions of dollars in donations, the group has been repeatedly exposed for using these funds on personal expenses instead of the social justice causes the group claimed they supported. After multiple reports earlier this year of BLM using donations to buy mansions, yet another group leader has been accused of stealing more than $10 million from its charitable contributions.....If this happened on Wall Street, Democrats and other left-wing agitators would be up in arms, whining about capitalism, systemic racism, and white privilege. But because it is BLM, no one has said or done anything. But, in reality, no one should be surprised by this. The actions of BLM's founders are typical of leftist and Marxist regimes and organizations. It's not any new recipe for success; it's been the same formula for decades.........Simply put, BLM hustled people.
