BREAKING FROM THE CROTON CHRONICLE---CROTON BOARD OF TRUSTEES REACHES TENTATIVE AGREEMENT TO SELL PARKING LOT A TO WESTCHESTER DEVELOPER

Breaking: Croton Board of Trustees reaches tentative agreement to sell Parking Lot A to Westchester developer

After months of negotiations, Croton's BoT reveals plans to sell Lot A for $2.3 million. A total of 95 apartment units could be built on the lot and the adjacent property.

As those on the village mailing list will know, the Croton Board of Trustees has just announced a tentative agreement with the Westchester based developer WBP Development LLC. A summary of the deal and links to documents can be found here.

As we discussed in a post in the Chronicle last December, entitled “The Crying of Parking Lot A,” the entire process has been marked by a distinct lack of transparency. The Board will now discuss the deal—which is contingent on the developer being able to purchase the private lot next to Lot A, which would allow construction of 95 apartment units—for the first time publicly at its regular Wednesday evening meeting. NEW FROM THE CROTON CHRONICLE: Lowest paid workers in Croton-Harmon schools hope for a better deal as negotiations for a new contract begin

Teacher Aides and Food Service workers get just over minimum wage and no benefits even after many years of service. Superintendent Walker promises a “fair” agreement.

Jean Giordano has worked for the Croton-Harmon school district for 18 years. She is also president of the Aides of Croton United (ACU), the collective bargaining unit for Teacher Aides, Lunch Monitors, and Food Service Helpers in the district’s three schools. She and others organized the ACU eight years ago to represent the lowest paid workers in Croton’s school system, a group of nearly 60 employees. The current contract with the district went into effect July 1, 2021. It expires this coming June 30.

Last year, Giordano went to the district three times asking for financial help for the ACU’s members, “because we were all struggling.” She says the district said no, telling the union that it would have to wait for the next contract negotiations. At times, members of the union, along with supportive teachers and other colleagues, had to take up collections for employees who were financially strapped and were often working other jobs to make ends meet.

Croton is a relatively well-off community, but its Teacher Aides and food service workers are among the lowest paid in Westchester County. Over the time of the contract, about 60 members of the bargaining unit have left for other jobs, a very high turnover that could hardly be good for the students nor the teachers who rely heavily on Teacher Aides for help in the classroom. BARI WEISS---THEY WERE ASSAULTED ON CAMPUS FOR BEING JEWS.....

For a second, imagine that black students at Columbia were taunted with chants of "Go back to Africa."

Or imagine that a gay student at Yale was surrounded by homophobic protesters and hit in the eye with a flagpole.

Or imagine if a campus imam told Muslim students that they ought to head home for Ramadan because campus public safety could not guarantee their security. There would be relentless fury from our media and condemnation from our politicians.

Just remember the righteous—and rightful—outrage over the white supremacist “Unite the Right” march in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, where neo-Nazis chanted “The Jews will not replace us.”

This weekend at Columbia and Yale, student demonstrators did all of the above—only it was directed at Jews. They told Columbia students to “go back to Poland.”

A Jewish woman at Yale was assaulted with a Palestinian flag. And an Orthodox rabbi at Columbia told students to go home for their safety. What will the response be? READ MORE AT They Were Assaulted on Campus for Being Jews | The Free Press (thefp.com)

THE PERILS OF RAISING "SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTIVISTS"--POLICE STORM YALE CAMPUS WITH RIOT GEAR, ARREST STUDENTS, AS HUNDRED STAGE ANTI-ISRAEL PROTEST

Police clad in riot gear swarmed Yale University’s Connecticut campus early Monday and started arresting students who had been staging an anti-Israel protest encampment there for several days.

Footage posted online showed cops arriving at the Ivy League school and blocking off entrances to a plaza at the New Haven campus, where roughly 200 protesters had been gathered.

Cops started warning protesters they risked being arrested if they didn’t clear out, the Yale Daily News reported.

BIDEN'S TITLE IX REWRITE OBLITERATES FEMALE SPACES, FREE SPEECH

The Biden administration’s Department of Education unveiled a sweeping set of rules on Friday that effectively erase protections for sex-based spaces by expanding the Title IX prohibition against sex discrimination to include “gender identity” — a term that’s never mentioned in the original law.

A majority of Americans agree that males who claim to identify otherwise should not be allowed to infiltrate girls’ and women’s sports teams. As of now, some 25 states have laws or regulations aimed at keeping boys and men out of female-only spaces, on and off the field. LOHUD--HUDSON RIVER NY MUSICAL FESTIVAL REVIVAL DEPENDS ON FUNDRAISING

Fundraising underway to revive music and environmental festival, for Pete Seeger's sake--GARY STERN--Rockland/Westchester Journal News--
Several years after the demise of the long popular Clearwater Festival, organizers hope to present a new music and environmental festival next year if they can raise enough money.  The proposed Hudson River Folk Festival would revive a legacy of Pete Seeger, the late folk legend and activist who founded the Clearwater Festival with his wife, Toshi, in the 1970s. A new nonprofit called RiverFest for Pete's Sake hopes to hold the new festival over Father's Day weekend next year, on June 14 and 15, 2025, at Croton Point Park.
