AND NOW....A LETTER FROM THE 7/14 THROUGH 7/20/2022 GAZETTE

To the editor:

Shortly after I moved to Croton, I walked past a woman sitting at a table in front of what was then Grouchy Gabe’s (now Fratelli’s). It was Ginny Calcutti, and she was campaigning as a write-in candidate for local office. When she found out that I was not even registered to vote and had no intention of doing so, she firmly told me that Croton was not Manhattan: it was a small village where everyone had a voice and should not hesitate to participate. At the time, Ginny herself frequently had letters in The Gazette, especially about village spending and debt.

The Gazette still welcomes a range of voices and that can be seen in the thoughtful (and occasionally amusing) letters of David Bluestein (week of June 30/July 6), Therese Godoy, and Ned Rust (week of July 7/13). But outside of these pages, the scope of what is deemed socially acceptable thought has narrowed in recent years, both in Croton and nationwide. Reaction to the school curriculum is a prime example of how today’s reflexive tribalism damages our community.

If Mr. Astorino had used his press conference to declare the Earth to be round, the school board would have held an emergency meeting to revise the science curriculum and Croton would now have student chapters of the Flat Earth Society in the middle and high schools. Such is the state of discourse in 2022.

The problem for Croton’s reputation (and property values) is that people outside our area don’t know who Mr. Astorino is, and therefore they don’t see this as a partisan issue. One of my friends has typical Brooklyn progressive political views. Another is very progressive on social issues, especially matters of sex and gender. Neither is Republican, nor prudish. Both of them were shocked at the news reports.

There is a difference between quirky crazy and lunatic crazy. Quirky-with-good-schools vibe is a plus for Croton property values. Lunatic-crazy that gets TV satellite dish trucks parked outside your local high school is a negative for property values. Our school board members and our Mayor should bear that reality in mind going forward.

Outside of the Croton bubble the sex ed curriculum was news because both the substance and the televised reaction to parental objection was seen as lunatic crazy, a perception reinforced by the response of our Village Mayor and our State Senator.

As employees of the State of New York, Mr. Pugh and Mr. Harckham take periodic mandatory training on sexual harassment. They know that if they put up those slides or did the dirty words exercise during a workplace training session that there would be severe consequences—and rightfully so! There has been some discussion as to the intent of the classroom exercise. If Messrs. Pugh and Harckham stayed awake for their mandatory training, they know that in NYS intent does not matter. Sexual harassment is prohibited, regardless of how noble your intentions may have been.

I appreciate the feedback I have gotten from Gazette readers. A recurring theme is a reluctance to speak out about the Croton schools. In part, this is an example of the national narrowing of the Overton window. Parents are also concerned about the potential impact on their enrolled children. It would have been easy for School Superintendent Walker to say that Croton schools respect the agency of all high schoolers—even the “prudish” ones (as Croton’s mayor would call them), and will adjust the curriculum accordingly. Instead, the Superintendent issued a statement in support of the curriculum and went silent.

School administrators and teachers around the country have taken to repeating the canard that “we don’t teach students what to think, we teach them how to think.” The frequency of repetition is inversely correlated with the degree of truth, and parents are starting to realize that.

You never heard that quote in 1970s public schools. The schools did inculcate values, but in a manner that respected parents and students. In my fifth grade public school, the Catholics learned the words to dreidel dreidel dreidel (I made it out of clay), Jewish kids learned “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and we all learned tolerance for each other’s heritage. You couldn’t do that lesson today, but our school administrators should still respect that some Croton students come from homes where the values are more traditional and—horrors—even religiously-based. For men in official positions of power to bully teenagers by calling them prudish is a recent development.

In some wealthy school districts, parental opposition can be a curb on extreme curriculum as parents can afford to put their children in private school. That is unlikely to be the case in Croton where the school board need not be concerned with potential loss of state capitation dollars. Thirty-three apartments are on the way at Katz alone, and any interim disenrollment by “prudish and partisan” parents is actually a selling point for an increase to the $52 million budget.

But… in the long term, even the most progressive homebuyers may avoid a school district with a reputation for extreme curriculum—particularly one with misogynistic overtones. As the school board drafts the new Five Year Plan, they need to dial down the crazy sufficiently to avoid the high school becoming a magnet for news trucks.

If you believe that tolerance is essential to the functioning of a democratic community and that civility is a core value for teachers to instill in students, the actions of our School Superintendent and our elected officials over the past month should be cause for concern—no matter what your political views. Letters in The Gazette are one place to express your voice.

Ginny Calcutti’s admonition remains worth heeding. We are all affected by what goes on in our neighborhood, including when minors are being desensitized in order to make them less “prudish.” Whatever your perspective, the good news is that our community still has a local newspaper providing a forum for us to engage in discussion on matters like this. That is worth supporting: write a letter, or at least spring for a 75 cent copy to keep local journalism thriving in Croton.
