Catholic bookstore sues city over trans pronoun requirement

Curated for you by CP Editors

Queen of Angels Catholic Bookstore has filed a lawsuit against the City of Jacksonville in Florida for expanding its human rights ordinance to include protections for gender identity and sexual orientation. The bookstore contends the anti-discrimination law will force it to use the preferred pronouns of customers. "The law even prevents businesses from publishing 'any communication' a customer or government official might subjectively interpret as making someone feel 'unwelcome, objectionable, or unacceptable,' such as statements opposing gender-identity ideology," the lawsuit claims. Queen of Angels and owner Christie DeTrude are represented by the conservative nonprofit Alliance Defending Freedom, which has successfully argued religious liberty cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. ADF contends that DeTrude upholds "Catholic beliefs about gender and sexuality in her store and on the store's website" but is forbidden from doing so under Jacksonville's ordinance. Violations of the ordinance would leave DeTrude liable to pay fines and damages. "Americans should be free to say what they believe without fear of government punishment," added ADF Legal Counsel Rachel Csutoros. Read more.

By special request-----ALLEN FUNT, AUDREY MEADOWS, & THE OSSINING TREASURER 1960

It's no secret that Candid Camera's Allen Funt lived in Croton on Mt. Airy Road....

And so we weren't really surprised to discover this 1960 Patent Trader article about a little stunt both he and television actress Audrey Meadows (of Honeymooners fame) pulled over in nearby Ossining.

It must have been something too--and certainly reflective of a different time.

The Regal United Artists Theatres at the Cortlandt Town Center, located in Mohegan Lake at 3131 East Main St. (Route 6), was previously included on a list of 39 cinemas owned by Regal Cinemas parent company Cineworld that were to have their leases rejected as part of bankruptcy court filings.

However, in court documents filed in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas Houston Divison on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 30 of these leases were removed from the list, as Cineworld will instead attempt negotiations with the landlords for each of these theaters. Cortlandt Slated to Create Medical Oriented District
February 22, 2023 Rick Pezzullo CortlandtThe Cortlandt Town Board appears ready to vote on creating a Medical Oriented District (MOD), which is the first step for two pending projects in the area of New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital on Route 6.

At a work session last week, Supervisor Dr. Richard Becker said planning and legal staff would be preparing a resolution for the board to consider at its March 14 meeting to establish the MOD and refer it to the Planning Board.

“I am very much open to those zoning changes,” Councilman Robert Mayes said at the Feb. 13 work session. “We’re heading in the right direction for something that’s appropriate for this town.”

Town officials and residents who live in the neighborhood near the hospital have been debating for several years the merits of two separate developments that would lie within the MOD, which has been reduced from approximately 105 acres and 34 parcels to 69 acres and 13 parcels---MORE AT Cortlandt Slated to Create Medical Oriented District (theexaminernews.com)

HEALTH EXPERTS CONTINUE TO CONDEMN HOLTEC'S WASTEWATER PLAN

Health Experts Continue to Condemn Holtec’s Wastewater Plan--February 22, 2023 Rick Pezzullo Buchanan

Health experts continued to condemn the discharge of radioactive wastewater that may be dumped into the Hudson River as part of the decommissioning of the Indian Point nuclear power plants in Buchanan.

During a Feb. 16 online forum, health professionals contended Holtec International’s plans to release one million gallons of wastewater from the spent fuel cooling pools as early as August posed a serious threat to public health and the entire ecosystem.

“Exposure to even very low levels of radiation is more dangerous than previously estimated, especially for women, children, and during prenatal life,” said Dr. Kathy Nolan, pediatrician, President of Physicians for Social Responsibility of New York and co-founder of Concerned Health Professionals of New York. “Developing embryos, fetuses, and children have immature and rapidly growing organ systems, making them exquisitely sensitive to environmental exposures. Proportionally, they also receive greater doses of contaminants found in air, water, and food compared with adults, putting them at much greater risk from exposure to even tiny amounts of radioactive contaminants. There is no safe dose of radiation during prenatal and perinatal life,-----READ MORE AT Health Experts Continue to Condemn Holtec’s Wastewater Plan (theexaminernews.com)
