I will not comply': NYPD chief urges businesses to force patrons to 'show face' upon entry by removing masks

A chief New York Police Department (NYPD) official is encouraging businesses to require patrons to remove their masks upon entry in an effort to prevent crime, AM New York (AMNY) reports.

Per AMNY, Jeffrey Maddrey — "NYPD's highest-ranking uniformed officer" — made the announcement during a press conference last month in response to a Queens jewelry store robbery.

As a city in Westchester faces a rise in shoplifting incidents, police are outlining what they will do to combat them.

According to Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, property crime such as shoplifting has risen by 10 percent in the city, with 162 reported shoplifting incidents reported between December 2022 and February 2023

In a press conference held on Thursday, March 2, Spano and Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza admitted that the incidents have been a problem in the city as of late, and also outlined steps the city's police department is taking to stop them from rising more.  MORE AT Record Amount Of Shoplifting Incidents Happening In This Westchester City, Police Say | Cortlandt Daily Voice

Earlier this week Jazz wrote about an unusual request made by Nike directly to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. Nike’s store in Northeast Portland has been closed for months because of ongoing retail theft and the company wrote to ask if it could either pay to hire additional cops to patrol the area or pay off duty cops to do so. State Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Ban Release of Waste in Hudson--March 2, 2023 Rick Pezzullo 

State Senator Pete Harckham and Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg have introduced legislation that will prohibit the discharge of any radiological agent any waterbodies in New York State.

The proposed legislation was initiated when plans were announced by Holtec to release radioactive wastewater from the decommissioned Indian Point nuclear power plant into the Hudson River.

Past owners of the Indian Point Energy Center, which opened in 1962, had been releasing radioactive wastewater into the Hudson for decades. Through federal, state and local investments and actions, the river is considered much cleaner today than it once was.

“After decades of tremendous efforts to clean up the Hudson River, the idea of anyone dumping radioactive water into this estuary, the economic lifeblood of our region, is simply outrageous,” Harckham remarked. “No person, corporation or government has the right to recklessly pollute New York State’s waters, and the mere idea that this is being contemplated is troubling.
