OBITUARY AND SERVICE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ANTHONY J. VESSA

Anthony J. Vessa, age 80, of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Virginia Vessa of 50 years, his daughters Lori Darling and Karen-Ann Gaul, his sons-in-law Stephen and Matthew and his cherished grandchildren, Adam, Nolan and Callista. Anthony is also survived by his sister Patricia and her husband Angelo, his brother Richard and his wife Virginia, his brother John and his wife Barbara as well as a large close-knit extended family.

Anthony was born on September 22, 1942 in Long Island City, NY to the late Louis and Jean (Buttofuco) Vessa. Anthony grew up in Queens, NY and in 1961 joined the U.S Army as a border watcher in Germany, and took great pride in his role as a bugler. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and qualified as a Sharpshooter with the M-14 rifle. In 1974, Anthony moved to Croton-on-Hudson with his wife Virginia and started a family. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Karen-Ann and Lori, and enjoyed life in the suburbs.

Anthony had a long career with the phone company in NYC until he retired and became a crossing guard at the “5 corners” in Croton for many years, he took such pride and joy in helping children safely cross the street.

Anthony loved to dance (all arms!), listen to music and play his harmonica. Anthony kept up with the latest technology and enjoyed using social media to stay connected with his friends and family. He would always take candid family photos and videos at family events to share with loved ones, these memories will be forever cherished. Anthony loved a good strong cup of coffee paired with a pastry. At his core, Anthony was a lifelong Yankees fan who always followed his team closely. Most of all, Anthony was a very proud grandfather to his three grandchildren, and would never miss an opportunity to request a hug or a selfie with them. Our family is grateful to know that Anthony is at peace.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 21, 2023 from 4pm-8pm at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00am on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Holy Name of Mary Church, 114 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY.
