DEP NOTICE, AQUATIC ALGAECIDE APPLICATION AT NEW CROTON, MUSCOOT, CROSS RIVER, AND CROTON FALLS RESERVOIRS

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON

Aquatic Algaecide Application at New Croton, Muscoot, Cross River, and Croton Falls Reservoirs

To our anglers, boaters, and permit holders:

We hope you are having an enjoyable fishing season this year.

We want to inform you about an upcoming project to apply a second algaecide treatment to reservoirs within the Croton System. Depending on water quality data obtained this week, applications may occur on parts of the New Croton, Muscoot, Cross River, and Croton Falls reservoirs. The application is a common practice used in water supply systems to treat algae.

Starting next week, September 5th, you may notice DEP boats going back and forth across some parts of the reservoirs to apply the treatment. The algaecide (copper sulfate pentahydrate) used is not harmful to humans once dissolved in water and will not have any effects on water quality.

This year, we will also continue to remove hydrilla from the New Croton Reservoir by using fluridone, the safest and most effective option for removing this invasive weed. During the summer and early fall, anglers should expect to see additional boats on the reservoir as our contractors apply the treatment.

We continue to work with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to obtain all necessary permits for this important work. These projects will not affect the fish consumption advice provided by the NYS Department of Health (DOH).

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to further protect our reservoirs. If you have any questions, please email us at recreation@dep.nyc.gov.

SCHOOL CLOSURES, THE DAMAGE IS DULY NOTED, RANDI WEIGARTEN ETAL.

They warned the closures would cause serious, possibly irreversible, developmental retardation. They warned of severe learning loss.

Alas.

The critics were not just ignored, they were also maligned by a vicious cabal of politicians, news media personalities, and education professionals, most notably AmericanFederation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten. The critics were called monsters and "grandma killers." They were accused of not "trusting" the science.

"Children are resilient," the pro-closure camp smugly asserted. (No, it’s not that children are resilient. It’s that they don’t yet have the words to describe the ways in which you are harming them.)

Now, a little more than two years after the pandemic first came to America, new data confirm the mass school closures, which, by the way, Democratic politicians and teachers' unions enforced with a religious fever even long after the restrictions were shown to be little more than superstitious hocus-pokery, caused serious harm to young students.

"American students’ test scores plunge to levels unseen for decades," the Washington Post reported on Sept. 1. "Test scores in elementary school math and reading plummeted to levels unseen for decades," the report reads, citing the first "nationally representative report comparing student achievement from just before the pandemic to performance two years later."........At the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, the story is the same.Critics of the pandemic school closures have been vindicated (msn.com)

BY SPECIAL REQUEST--SCOOP 'N JUDY's, THE 1950's

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

With an Upper Village Historical Society Walking Tour scheduled for October 13th, (more info here), there's been a request for any info on

SCOOP ‘n JUDY’s.....

(With thanks as always to The Croton Historical Society for the information) - In the 1950’s, Scoop 'n Judy’s entertained a generation of Croton’s teens with its black and white sodas, soda fountain lime rickeys and cherry cokes—not to mention the latest music on the jukebox. (Click on the photo.) According to one resident, it was THE place to go to for grilled cheese and a chocolate egg cream. Located at 120 Grand Street, it had a number of owners throughout the years. From the Croton Historical Society archives, they were: Stone and Scully, Vince and Elise Matero, Buddy Regan, Ines Cappelazzi, George Monks.

And if you ever wondered how the place got the name, the answer can be found in the article here.

These days, a more modern but still nostalgic version of Scoop's is more or less a few doors down from the old location----it's known as Croton Corners---Croton Corners & Hudson Tea Co.--check out the soda shop menu here. CC NOTE CLOSED IN JUNE 2023.

I REMEMBER MAMA, ANOTHER MOVIE FOR YOUR BUCKET LIST

And now another film for your movie bucket list: I Remember Mama---CLICK ON THE OLD AD,

This is a 1948 American drama film directed by George Stevens from a screenplay by DeWitt Bodeen, whose work was adapted from John Van Druten's stage play. Druten, in turn, had based his play on Kathryn Forbes' novel Mama's Bank Account, which was originally published by Harcourt Brace in 1943.

The story in all its variant forms recounts the everyday life and economic struggles of a Norwegian immigrant family in San Francisco in the early 20th century. The film stars Irene Dunne as the mother, as well as Barbara Bel GeddesOscar HomolkaEllen Corby and Philip Dorn. Homolka portrays Uncle Chris in the film, a role he had performed earlier in the Broadway production. It's a wonderful family film.
