Opinion---We are part of The Trust Project

This is the 13th installment in an ongoing investigative series, launched in December 2022, about CareMount/Optum, broader local healthcare issues and corporate medicine.
By Adam Stone

Although I’ve done a ton of reporting over the past 14 months about Optum, and the destructive impact of the company’s takeover of our local healthcare, I haven’t previously interviewed anyone on the inside possessing internal knowledge of corporate administration.

That changed last week when I spoke to an anonymous source with intimate insight into the company’s thinking.

On Thursday, both that source and a veteran CareMount/Optum Tri-State doctor I’ve previously interviewed reached out to alert me of a new five-alarm fire: significant local layoffs were enacted last week.

I’ll get to those unfolding details in a moment, but I also have a scoop to share with potentially broader, more national implications, confirmed through internal company correspondence I obtained just days ago. THE AMAZING BARI WEISS---WHAT IT MEANS TO CHOOSE FREEDOM---WITH APOLOGIES FOR THE DELAY

This past Sunday, I gave a speech at the 92nd Street Y called “The State of World Jewry.” The address is a historic one. Over four decades, it has been delivered by the likes of Elie Wiesel, Abba Eban, Amos Oz, and more.

But for a sense of the state of Jewish life in America these days, you need only to have walked by the building that night. You would’ve found that police had cordoned off the entire block—and for good reason. Anti-Israel protesters, many wearing masks, gathered to intimidate those who came to the lecture. On the way in, you would’ve been screamed at—told you were a “baby killer” and “genocide supporter” among other choice phrases. You might have even glimpsed Jerry Seinfeld being heckled and called “Nazi scum” on his way out of the talk. (Classy.)

This is of a piece with what’s happening across the country at Jewish events.

On Monday at the University of Berkeley, to choose one of so many examples, a violent mob gathered outside an event featuring an IDF reservist. The students who gathered to hear him—and never got a chance to—were forced to evacuate. One student reported being physically assaulted. Another says he was spat on. Various students say the mob yelled slurs including “Jew, Jew, Jew.”

I am beyond grateful to the NYPD, and the entire staff of the 92nd Street Y, for making sure that everyone who attended the talk was able to do so safely. BREAD THE REST AND HER SPEECH TOO AT Bari Weiss: What It Means to Choose Freedom | The Free Press (thefp.com)

ROWLING--THE DATA THAT SHOWS JK ROWLING IS CORRECT

In criminology, it is one of the least controversial statements to make: men commit vastly more crimes than women.

Yet this is the statement JK Rowling felt forced to make in reaction to the coverage of Scarlet Blake, the convicted murderer born a male but who identifies as a woman.

In a tweet referencing Sky News’s decision to describe Blake as a “woman”, the author said: “I’m sick of this s—. This is not a woman. These are #NotOurCrimes.” READ MORE AT The data that shows JK Rowling is correct (msn.com)

3/16 & 3/17 AT HOLY NAME OF MARY--TACONIC OPERA--TWO REQUIEMS--MOZART AND FAURE

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Two Requiems

Taconic Opera presents two famous oratorios, Mozart’s Requiem and Fauré’s Requiem at one performance! Both are presented with the orchestra, chorus, and soloists of the Taconic Opera. Many remember Mozart’s Requiem being composed at the end of his life as the pinnacle of his classical composing style. Fauré’s famous Requiem anticipates the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. His work is more uplifting, having rid itself of the “Dies Irae” and other severe parts of the death masses. He added texts from the Rite of Burial which traditionally follow the Requiem Mass. As a result, the work is an uplifting and exalting work not to be missed. TWO PERFORMANCES!
