A LOOK BACK AT CROTON'S UNITED CIGAR STORE

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

We try to answer all requests--here's an old one--a request for "anything on the old UNITED CIGAR STORE on Riverside before the highway". Click on the images below, courtesy of the outstanding archives maintained by the volunteers of The Croton Historical Society.

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW: United Cigar Stores was a chain of cigar stores in the United States that in its first quarter-century grew to nearly 3,000 shops. It eventually became part of the corporation that bought Marvel Comics and its parent company Magazine Management from their founder in 1968. Read more here.

  2. I grew up on Terrace Place, spent a lot of summer days hanging around Irving & Fanny's store(United Cigar). We always called it Irvings.-Comic books aplenty. There was a playground on the hill just in back of the store," Bottle Top" bazaar was a big favorite game with the kids and counselors(also kids). Along the Brook Street side of the store there was a big storage box with a sloped lid for newspapers, enough space for 2 or three of us 8-10 year olds to sit on top of sipping our sodas.Sliding off the top usually ripped the seat out of our pants getting caught on a nail.Irving, Fanny and another guy named Jack(not sure if he was family) were always there in the store 10-12 hours a day. They had a soda fountain too and made the best cold chocolate syrup egg cream sodas. It was an easy walk from Irving's store to cross the railroad tracks and head on over for a day of swimming in the Hudson off the docks or down by what is now known as Senasqua Park.
