Elizabeth “Bette” Matero, of Hopewell Junction and a long-time resident of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, passed away on June 28, 2023 at the age of 92.
Bette was born on July 29, 1930 in Ossining, NY to Frank and Margaret (Landgraff) Caterino. After graduating from Ossining High School, she worked as a telephone operator for the phone company. She then married Francis “Frank” Anthony Matero in 1951.
She was known by many as the Croton-on-Hudson Court Clerk from 1970 to 1995, before she retired to enjoy her love of baking, dancing, singing, crossword puzzles and animals. Bette was also known for her deep commitment to faith at the Holy Name of Mary Church, where she served for many years as a Eucharistic Minister and a member of their choir.
Her greatest love, was that of her family. She is survived by her three daughters, Donna Boyles, Sharon Seymour and Terry Bronzo (Stephen), her eight grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Frank (1967). Following his untimely death, Bette seamlessly took on a role beyond that of just mother, where she was responsible for being a father, provider and matriarch, which she stoically held up until hear death. She was also predeceased by her six siblings, Larry, Claire, Louise, Tommy, Margie and Frank.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023, from 4pm to 8 pm at the Edward F. Carter Funeral Home located at 41 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at the Holy Name of Mary Church, Croton-on Hudson, NY on Friday July 7, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Burial will immediately follow at Bethel Cemetery, also in Croton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bette’s name to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts of Dutchess County (C.A.R.E.) or an animal rescue of your choice.
