New law enrolls every NY driver in pricier auto insurance coverage. Half will get no benefit

A state law that took effect Aug. 1 requires every driver to be enrolled in pricier auto insurance, but only married couples can possibly reap a benefit from the new protections.Joshua Bessex/Buffalo News

ALBANY – Because of a new state law, every driver in New York is poised to be automatically enrolled in expanded, more expensive auto insurance coverage.

That includes millions of unmarried motorists who would derive no benefit from the extra coverage, which allows an individual to sue their spouse for damages stemming from negligent driving.

  1. Just one more poorly thought out law added to the potpourri of insane laws legislated by our politically corrupt state government and out of their mind, governor. As they continue to crush the remnants of the middle class in the state of New York.
