Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
COURTESY OF THE CROTON HIST. SOCIETY FB PAGE ---GRAND STREET SCHOOLHOUSE, circa 1890s--CLICK ON THE PHOTO---In 1869 this schoolhouse was built on Grand Street. It was originally a two-room school, shown here after it was expanded in 1890 at a cost of $4,000. The building on the left was Edward White’s general store, to which he later added a funeral home. The house in the background on the right is 138 Maple Street.
Before the school was expanded there were two teachers. One lived down the street and taught in the Croton schools for 43 years (from 1886 to 1929). Although she taught many different subjects and grades, she was primarily an English teacher and was beloved by the community. Her name was Carrie E. Tompkins.
Today this building is the Grand Street Fire House. On a pedestal out front is the bell of the old school, which is inscribed “Croton Union Free School District No. 2.” (2) Facebook
