LOCAL JOURNALISM NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

Michael Balter from The Croton Chronicle <thecrotonchronicle@substack.com>

Local journalism needs your support. The time to subscribe is now.

On January 1, The Croton Chronicle goes into subscription mode, for as little as $5/month. Some articles will continue to be free, and there will be regular promotions—including a 30 day free trial.

Note to readers: This post is intended mainly for those who have not yet pledged a subscription to The Croton Chronicle. If you have already done so, you don’t need to read any further—although you might want to anyway.

For more than two months, we have worked hard to bring you local news and features you can’t find anywhere else. We have broken numerous important stories, and provided in-depth coverage and analysis of many others. We have profiled interesting and important people who make our village a fascinating and lively place. And we have remained laser-focused on Croton-on-Hudson, making this the only strictly local publication the village has had in many decades.

In doing so, we have bucked an unfortunate national trend in local journalism, whereby large corporations have either bought up community news outlets or closed them down entirely. Often, news coverage is provided by a small number of journalists who do not live in the communities they cover and don’t really know the people or the issues. The Croton Chronicle, on the other hand, is locally produced by an editor who lives in the heart of the village.

Here are some highlights of our coverage. As you can see, it ranges from hard reporting to softer features and everything in between:

The Crying of Parking Lot A

Alleged Croton burglar has cases pending in at least three other jurisdictions for burglary, drug charges, criminal trespass, and other charges.

For nearly two years, the Finkelstein family has been working on plans to rezone and redevelop the property at 1 Half Moon Bay Drive. Village officials have known all along, but failed to tell us.

Gouveia update: Croton's board favors a plan to make a plan. Is it for real this time?

Chronicle profile: Croton-on-Hudson's village historian, Marc Cheshire

Chronicle profile: Croton's Bird Commissioner, Cary Andrews

Our Hudson River: A treasure trove for underwater archaeology.

Beginning January 1, we will hit the paid subscriptions button and ask you to support this local journalistic effort. Subscriptions will be $5/month or $50/year—the lowest amount the Substack platform allows—and the Chronicle will publish at least once a week except for occasional holiday periods (and probably even then.) We will also publish breaking news stories as soon as possible after events occur.

Having a financial base will allow the Chronicle to expand its local coverage and also add new features, including podcasts and other multi-media enhancements.

Not only will your subscription get you all future posts in The Croton Chronicle, you will also have access to the archive of all past posts.

For those who have already pledged their subscription support, Substack will begin processing payments early in the New Year.

For those who have not yet taken the plunge:

If you have been reading the Chronicle for free for more than 30 days, we would ask that you go ahead and pledge your subscription now by clicking on this button:
