The following letter appears in this week's Gazette.
Please take a moment to read it and share if you have children walking to CHHS/PVC via Thompson Avenue.

To the editor:
Our families call the dead-end side of Thompson Avenue in Croton home. We love our quiet street and especially enjoy watching the kids going to and from Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School and Croton-Harmon High School along our street - walking, biking, scooters, skateboards, etc.
In the last few years there has been an unfortunate uptick in traffic to our dead end. Cars and SUVs are traveling at excessive speeds down our street to drop kids off for school.
This has resulted in minor vehicle accidents, damage to property - erosion of grass and sidewalks, damaging our garbage cans and recycling bins, and a constant flow of cars using our private driveways as their own personal u-turn.
The traffic has created dangerous conditions for the kids walking in the road and on the sidewalks (often looking down at their phones) as cars and SUVs careen down the street and then attempt to make u-turns in a very narrow roadway. In addition to our students, Thompson Avenue is also home to many families with very young children.
They use the dead-end to play ball, master riding their first tricycle, or simply enjoy sidewalk chalk on a sunny day. Vehicles traveling at excessive speeds cause a risk to these youngsters that are still developing pedestrian safety understanding.
We are also a destination for dog walkers from surrounding neighborhoods that flock to Thompson Avenue to enjoy the quiet oasis and the shaded/wooded area at the end of the street.
We fear that if this traffic does not stop, eventually there will be a tragic event that could easily be avoided by dropping off students at the designated vehicle drop-off areas for our schools.
For the safety of all children and out of respect for the families on Thompson Avenue, we ask that you please use the designated drop-off location for PVC, which is at Olcott Avenue and Glen Place.

Thanks for doing this. I'm on an adjoining street and the entitlement of some of these parents is too much. I've had them park over my driveway.
ReplyDeleteMy mom has had that too. They say things like "we'll be back in five, ten minutes" and "You're not going anywhere anyway"! Makes her so upset.
