A subject of intense local chatter.......Pronouns, free speech, and the First Amendment

Some public universities and other government entities have punished or threatened to punish individuals who refuse to use others’ specified pronouns. Below, we explore the serious compelled speech issues raised by pronoun mandates.

Do pronoun mandates raise First Amendment and free speech issues?

Yes. When the government mandates what pronouns individuals must use when referring to others, it threatens to force some people to say things that contradict their beliefs. Any policy compelling the use of certain pronouns intrudes on the right to private conscience and, when it comes from the government, violates the First Amendment.

Government-compelled speech is an especially pernicious abuse of power. MORE AT Pronouns, free speech, and the First Amendment | The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (thefire.org)

EXAMINER NEWS---APPELLATE DIVISION RULES AGAINST MT. PLEASANT IN E-MAIL LIST CASE

A subject of intense local interest: Appellate Division Rules Against Mt. Pleasant in E-mail List Case

July 10, 2024---Martin Wilbur

The Town of Mount Pleasant may continue to fight a recent Appellate Division ruling that concluded the municipality must provide a resident the e-mail list of subscribers to its E-news bulletins.Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi said the town is exploring its options with whether to go to the Court of Appeals in hopes of thwarting Hawthorne resident Jim Russell from gaining access to the list. A decision will need to be made in the next couple of weeks, he said.

Russell filed an Article 78 in state Supreme Court in May 2022 after a Freedom of Information request to the town for the list of the town’s e-mail subscribers was rejected several months earlier. MORE AT Appellate Division Rules Against Mt. Pleasant in E-mail List Case | The Examiner News

BY SPECIAL REQUEST AND BACK FOR 2024: THE CROTON GARDENER! #7, WILDFLOWERS AND THE LATE MARION COSTELLO

The late Marion Costello was generous in so many ways; a lover of the theatre, she provided the blog with many copies of her “vintage” Playbills for scanning--and sharing.  But Marion was also an avid National Geographic reader—and she was always passing on items to be scanned and shared—in particular, this set of American Wildflower botanical illustrations from the 1915 edition of the National Geographic.
