This tournament is our biggest fundraiser and has enabled us to provide significant support to the Holy Name of Mary Parish community as well as other worthy causes at the local and national levels. We are targeting a significant portion of the proceeds from this year’s tournament to support an initiative with Blythedale Children’s Hospital to provide specially designed gaming consoles for resident children with special needs.

Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) is active from now through Labor Day. DEC asks pool owners to check filters for the invasive insect regularly, and submit a report if any are found. (CLICK ON THE PHOTO.)

ALB attacks and kills maples, birches, willows, and other hardwoods. They emerge from infested trees in the late summer to find a new host. The beetles are 1.5 inches long, have long black-and-white antennae, and have black and white spots on their body.

They should not be confused with the native white-spotted pine sawyer, which has a distinctive white spot on their back, below their head.

No pool? You can still help! Be on the lookout for ALB exit holes, sawdust accumulating at the base of trees, oozing sap, or pits in bark.

Officials Oppose OSHA’s Emergency Response Proposal

U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler (R) and other officials held a press conference at the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department Monday to address the new OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) rule that could harm local fire departments and taxpayers. 

Lawler was joined by State Assemblyman Matt Slater (R-Yorktown), State Senator Rob Rolison (R), and many Putnam Valley volunteer firefighters, all expressing serious concerns of the potential effects of OSHA’s proposed emergency response standard.

On Feb. 5, OSHA’s Emergency Response proposal was released to update and replace the existing Fire Brigades Standard issued in 1980. The new regulations seek to cover a broader range of emergency responders and incorporate workplace protections from occupational hazards. It outlines new training requirements, equipment upgrades, and other allocation of resources for fire departments across the country.  However, officials maintained this new standard would be incredibly burdensome to volunteer-based departments and services. First up....we think the Japanese made some of the funniest, kitschiest, and cleverest little toys ever in the 1950's and 60's! Like this one! V.I.P. THE BUSY BOSS! Featured in a previous auction at the former SeriousToyz.

Made by Craigstan S&E Co., Japan, 8”, tin b/o. Just dial ‘your’ phone, & he answers his & speaks; professionally repaired w/ table lamp & “wires” replaced. It sold for $203.84 at auction.

We love finding new paper modeling sites---and when we stumbled upon PAPER SHIPWRIGHT out of the U.K., we spent quite a bit of time there....Based in Cambridge in the UK, Paper Shipwright has been publishing high-quality paper/card models since 1999. Paper Shipwright is the trading name of David Hathaway. The range of models published reflects the market niche initially identified – namely smaller Victorian-era warships – but has since expanded to include modern vessels as well as civilian subjects and buildings with a maritime theme.....Each model’s subject is exhaustively researched and designed based on original drawings and sources wherever possible. All the models include a history of the vessel, English instructional text and full assembly diagrams.

While some models are free and can be downloaded at no charge, others must be bought and all purchased models are only available as printed copies. The majority of the models published have been designed by David Hathaway and they are printed in small batches on a photo-quality inkjet printer that uses light-fast and waterproof pigment inks. We sometimes forget that in the 50's and 60's, and even the early 70's, Christmas lights were also manufactured in Italy; we've seen the ones to the right very rarely--and only in green.  A wonderful find from a collecting friend--we believe they are from the mid to late 1960's, possibly early 1970's. With many thanks for sharing this awesome find in such great condition.
