LAND OF PEACE MISSION AT HOLY NAME MARY, AFTER MASSES, 8/24 AND 8/25

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Land of Peace Mission After mass on the weekend of August 24th & 25th, our brothers and sisters representing the Land of Peace mission, a nonprofit organization, will be with us speaking about the Christian situation in the Holy Land and selling Crucifixes, religious art work, and rosaries - all made of olive wood which is native to Israel and Bethlehem. The director of the Land of Peace Mission tells us: “Since tourism has greatly depleted, Christian families in the holy land who depend on tourists, have been greatly affected. The goal of this mission is to help the poor and needy families in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Sale of these goods will help them greatly and also give you the opportunity to have something authentic from the holy land. Please browse and buy some articles. It is for a good cause and also a help to your personal devotion.”p website: www.landofpeace.org

POP BERGER'S STATIONERY, BY SPECIAL REQUEST

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

POP BERGER’S STATIONERY--With special thanks to The Croton Historical Society

One of the EC Elves finally got around to consolidating all the bits and pieces we have accumulated over the years on Maurice Berger--a.k.a. POP BERGER---and one of the founders of the Croton Little League---read more and click on the images below....

Closed by the late 1970’s, Pop Berger’s Stationery, (located on the same block as then Wondrous Things) is still remembered with a smile. Owned by Maurice Berger, it was THE place to go to for the latest comic books and a "great after-school hangout".

One resident recalls fondly how she would look forward to the latest edition of Archie coming out. For another, it was whatever superhero ruled the day. Others remember the seemingly endless variety of penny candy and wondering what to choose, then the bliss of being handed a fresh paper bag filled with Mary Janes, marshmallow “ice cream cones”, “orange slices”—a Chuckles type confection--and root beer barrels.

Places like Pop Berger's are largely gone today, more’s the pity, but will live on forever fondly for those lucky enough to have had the experience.

UPDATE--POP BERGER'S EPILOGUE: While doing some research at THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY, we came across this photo of Maurice “Pop” Berger while he was stationed in Italy during WWII. (See below) That’s when we learned something worth mentioning: when Pop got back to the states, he gave every Croton kid a free ice cream. That’s the kind of memory that is still with people today and ultimately perhaps, the best kind of tribute.
