FAMILIES OF 9/11 VICTIMS RIP PLEA DEAL ALLOWING MASTERMIND KSM TO AVOID DEATH PENALTY

The grieving families of the heroic first responders killed in the Sept. 11 attacks slammed a plea deal struck Wednesday that allows three alleged terrorists — including accused mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammad — to avoid the death penalty.

”I feel like I was kicked,” said retired NYPD officer Jim Smith, whose wife, Moira Smith, was the only female police officer killed in the terror attacks.

“The prosecution and families have waited for 23 years to have our day in court to put on the record what these animals did to our loved ones. They took that opportunity away from us. They committed the worst crime in the history of our country they should receive the highest penalty.” MORE AT Families of 9/11 victims rip plea deal allowing mastermind KSM to avoid death penalty (nypost.com)

SIXTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS HANDS PARENTS DEFENDING EDUCATION A DEFEAT IN A CASE SIMILAR TO PDE'S LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CROTON-HARMON DISTRICT

Welcome to The New Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals hands Parents Defending Education a defeat in a case similar to PDE’s lawsuit against the Croton-Harmon district. Use/misuse of pronouns is a major issue in the case.

In a 2-1 ruling involving an Ohio school district, the court declined to give PDE a preliminary injunction against policies designed to prevent harassment of transgender students.

As most readers will know, this June the conservative organization Parents Defending Education filed suit against the Croton-Harmon school district in an effort to block enforcement of all of the district’s anti-harassment, anti-bullying, anti-racist, and DEI policies. Earlier this month, U.S. district judge Cathy Seibel dismissed the case on the grounds that PDE did not have legal “standing” to file it in the first place, mainly because it relied on anonymous parents as plaintiffs. PDE is now appealing that decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, our local federal appellate court. OBITUARY AND SERVICE INFO FOR JAIME CARLOS SALLES

Jaime Carlos Sallés, a self-described architect by profession, writer and speaker by inclination, professor by vocation, and poet by devotion, passed away peacefully at his home in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, on Sunday, July 28, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Jaime was born in Havana, Cuba on October 12, 1930, to Vicente José Sallés y Turrell and Mercedes Buigas y Sans. He studied at El Colegio de la Salle schools in Havana, Cuba, and went on to obtain his Master of Architecture degree at the University of Havana, graduating first in his class in 1953. He became a faculty member at the University of Havana in 1954, eventually becoming the youngest Associate Professor with tenure at the University.

While in Cuba, he was the Vice President and Secretary of the Havana Chapter of the Colegio Nacional de Arquitectos de Cuba (National Association of Cuban Architects). He was famously proud of the fact that the association actively rebelled against the Cuban Revolution on January 28, 1960 (the anniversary of José Martí’s birth) at the classic Arte Deco Colegio Nacional’s offices in El Vedado on the Avenida Infanta y Calle 104 Humboldt. In 1961, the association was reestablished in the United States as the National Association of Cuban Architects in Exile (NACA) with Jaime serving in multiple positions, including as President and historian. Additionally, he was an active member in the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA), serving on the National Board of Directors and as National Chairman of SARA’s International Committee.

Those who knew Jaime understood him to be a commanding, larger-than-life personality with a sharp intellect and a vast memory. He was a student (and professor) of architectural history, a skilled orator, and an individual with a penchant for the spotlight – especially to recite his poetry at any and all gatherings (occasions which his offspring affectionately referred to as the “dad show”).
