AN ISSUE OF INTENSE  LOCAL CHATTER--SITING LARGE LITHIUM BATTERIES NEAR HOMES AND GAS STATIONS IS LITERALLY PLAYING WITH FIRE

New York City can’t seem to get its head straight when it comes to lithium-ion batteries.

On the one hand, in response to the 733 lithium-ion battery e-bike and scooter fires that have broken out in the five boroughs since 2019, political leaders launched an initiative to ban the vehicles from apartment lobbies.

The battery packs that power these unsafe devices are about 18 inches long and 6 inches wide. And they seem to catch fire often, resulting not only in significant property damage, but also in the loss of innocent lives: at least 29 New Yorkers killed in the last five years.

On the other hand, the City Council approved the City of Yes for Carbon Neutrality in December, expanding the zoning allowances for lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems.

Now, the city is siting dozens of facilities consisting of enormous 40-foot-long lithium-ion batteries throughout Staten Island — in the heart of residential neighborhoods, and in some cases less than 30 feet from homes and gas stations. AN IMPORTANT LETTER FROM JESSICA DIECKMAN REGARDING CROTON'S URBANIZATION, ETC.

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

To my neighbors of The Village of Croton on Hudson,

I attended the village board meeting on July 24th. There were between 80-100 + people packing this meeting, and everyone was against the proposed zoning change of the 1 Half Moon Bay tire warehouse site from light industrial to residential, to allow for 280 new proposed apartments. People were strongly united against this, as well as the development of Lot A (by the train station), and asked for a moratorium on any new development. The only person who spoke in favor of the rapid and aggressive push for big apartment buildings all over Croton was the President of the Croton Housing Network, clearly a conflict of interest.

Croton residents are very frustrated because we feel that the board and the mayor ignore our concerns with the proposed colossal development projects.

Everyone at the meeting, regardless of political alignments, asked the mayor and trustees to slow down to see how we absorb what is still currently being built. Despite many intelligent arguments and passionate pleas, the board voted to start the rezoning process for the tire warehouse site. I add a special thank you to board member Nora Nicholson for voting no, she should be commended for listening to and sincerely considering residents’ input.

I invite concerned residents to go to board meetings, go to planning board meetings, write letters to the board and The Gazette. These actions can protect our village from greedy developers who don’t have our best interests at heart. This is a serious issue: Our schools, roads, fire, police and other infrastructure can’t smoothly cope with a massive population increase in a short time.

Please consider running for village board, regardless of your party affiliation. Local village politics are what people care about for these important issues. Please contact the village and The League of Women Voters about this if you are interested. Competition is a healthy and necessary thing and Croton is long overdue for it!

I also invite residents to sign two important petitions on change.org:

  1. Move village elections back to March! (TO SIGN THIS PETITION, CLICK HERE)

  2. Stop Croton’s Urbanization now! (TO SIGN THIS PETITION, CLICK HERE)

These petitions can also be found on The Croton Uncensored Facebook page.

Let’s unite our village against runaway development!

Sincerely,
Jessica Dieckman

OFF THE TABLE--AUSTIN REVOKES 9/11 TERRORISTS PLEA DEAL IN SHOCKING REVERSAL, ASSORTED ARTICLES

--NY POST, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revokes plea deal for accused 9/11 terrorists in shocking reversal ByVictor Nava,Craig McCarthy, Larry Celona and Chris Nesi, Published Aug. 2, 2024...Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin on Friday revoked the shocking plea deals that would have spared the death penalty for the accused mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and two alleged accomplices. In an official memo, Austin, 70, announced he had relieved the official responsible for signing off on the widely criticized plea agreements from authority and would instead assert his own authority in the matter. “I have determined that, in light of the significance of the decision to enter into pre-trial agreements with the accused in the above-referenced case, responsibility for such a decision should rest with me as the superior convening authority under the Military Commissions Act of 2009,” Austin wrote.
