Help Protect New York's Bat Populations During Bat Week

Bat Week is an internationally recognized celebration of the important role bats play in our environment. It is a great time to appreciate New York’s bat species, and it is observed October 24 through 31.

Of the nine bat species found in New York, six are cave bats—meaning they hibernate in caves and mines throughout the winter, while the three tree bat species migrate to warmer areas. Since 2006, cave bats in the state have been devastated by a fungal disease known as White-nose syndrome (WNS). For example, Northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis) have faced 99% population declines due to WNS and are now federally and state listed as endangered. Recently, scientists have found some evidence of recovery of the once-common little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus). While this seeming stabilization provides a hopeful outlook after a devastating 90% population decline, similar evidence of stabilization has not been seen for other severely affected bat species.

You can help! Protect New York's bat populations by avoiding caves and mines, which may be home to hibernating bats, from November through April. WNS makes bats very sensitive to disturbances during hibernation, and human activity can be particularly disturbing, causing them to use up their energy stores too quickly before spring. Even a single, seemingly quiet visit can kill bats that would otherwise survive the winter. If you see hibernating bats, assume you are doing harm and leave immediately. Anyone entering a listed bat hibernation site from November 1 through April 30 may be subject to prosecution.

THE LONG ROAD TO FREEDOM FOR JACK PHILLIPS

Few living Americans have stood longer against government persecution for their freedoms than Colorado baker Jack Phillips. He has been repeatedly targeted under Colorado anti-discrimination law for adhering to his Christian faith. At long last, his third legal saga is over after the Colorado supreme court on Tuesday rejected the latest lawsuit against him on procedural grounds. After twelve years, Phillips is free of the courts. We can only hope he stays free — and that his fellow citizens will, too.

The end of the current round of persecution of Phillips is cause for celebration but not for unbridled joy. This is America. It is a scandal that any of the lawsuits against Phillips were brought, and it is a scandal that the courts have not rejected them squarely on the merits, in terms that made plain that this must not happen here again. School district considers locking up phones during class time

A distraction-free environment can make a world of difference to a student’s academic success and that’s why Peekskill City School District administrators are examining whether cell phones have a place in the classroom or not.

Officials held two meetings on the topic last week. On Sept. 30, administrators met with the Superintendent’s Youth Advisory Council, comprised of students and faculty. The next day a small gathering of parents met to discuss the issue. MORE AT School district considers locking up phones during class time – Peekskill Herald
